William Wirt Hughes, Jr.
November 25, 1942 - September 23, 2023
William "Bill" Wirt Hughes, Jr., age 80, of Clermont sadly passed away on Saturday, September 23, 2023. Bill was born in Chicago, Illinois and spent his formative years in Morris, Illinois with his parents, William "Wirt" Hughes, Sr. and Mary Jane (Watson) Hughes. Following high school, Bill served in the U.S. Military Reserves and attended Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois where he pledged the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He later transferred to the University of Colorado where he graduated with a business degree.
In an encounter through mutual acquaintances, Bill met and married Judith "Judy" Jane Hollister in June of 1966 in Boulder, Colorado. They moved soon thereafter to begin their life together in Omaha, Nebraska where Bill began what would be a long and successful career in Agricultural Sales, which he loved so much he worked well into his 70's. After living in Syracuse, NY and Pittsburgh, PA, his career eventually landed the family in Michigan, where he worked until his retirement in 2018, and they raised their two children, William and Hollister "Holli" in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Bill and Judy moved to Clermont, FL in 2021 to be closer to family and warmer weather. Bill loved to reminisce about his life experiences and shenanigans, telling endless stories of mischief, memories and cherished moments, always with a sense of humor and to make others smile.
Bill was married to his soulmate and wife of 57 years, Judy, and a fiercely loving father to his children and their families - who he treasured time and connection with as much as he could - and extended family on Judy's side:
Son William W. Hughes, III, and granddaughter, Hailey Morrison
Daughter Hollister (Mark) Barker, and grandchildren, Samuel, Maxwell and Lucas
Sister-in-law, Kathy Hollister, and nephew Edward "Mac" (Jen) Hollister and grand niece, McKenzie; and niece Katie (John) Johnson, and grand nieces, Grace and Emma
Brother-in-law, Gary (Emily) Hollister, and nephew Joseph (Kara) and grand nephew, Peter
A celebration of life will be held in 2024 in Boulder, Colorado where he will be laid to rest with cherished loved ones who preceded him in their passing. In this time of sorrow, we find solace in the memories shared and the lives touched by Bill. In lieu of flowers, please consider a charitable donation in his name to the Susan G. Komen foundation for breast cancer research. We thank all family and friends who have reached out with words of comfort, offers of support and beautiful stories to remember him by.
