This is very hard to say, but on August 3rd 2016 I lost my dad. He was taken to the emergency room July 27 2016 and was told he needed an aortic valve replacement because the current valve was very narrow making blood flow very difficult. My dad would have turned 88 in September and has lived with Stephanie, myself and the "kids" for the past six years. We knew he was starting to slow down somewhat, but honestly wrote that off to advanced age. His mind was as sharp as a tack and his commitment to our family and all animals was unquestionable. He always wanted to help where he could and as a real people person his ability to connect with anyone he met was a true art. People and animals loved him!
We were moving forward on a procedure that would have allowed a valve replacement once he was stable, but Tuesday morning around 3AM we got a call from the hospital that he had coded and for 10 to 14 minutes he wasn't receiving oxygen on his own. Wednesday, August 3, 2016, he passed and we believe his soul is now at rest. We know Mr. Tee, Mr. Jake, Miss Sarah, Miss Tory, Miss Cindy, Mr. Brandy, Miss Kiri, Mr. Travis, Mr. Sparky and all the other four-legged children in his life will meet him at The Rainbow Bridge welcoming him to Heaven.
My dad was a professional drummer earlier in his life and he never lost his love for Big Band. As time moved on he became a salesman and buyer extraordinaire. He was always upbeat and people loved to be around him because he was such an amazing person. My love of all kinds of music comes from my dad as does my love of all sports teams New York; especially the New York Yankees. We went on a baseball tour about two months ago together and got to visit both Cooperstown (Baseball Hall of Fame) and the new Yankee Stadium. I'm so glad we were able to see these majestic venues together.
My dad loved his volunteer work for Houndhaven in Lake County. He was able to merge his love of dogs with the opportunity to help provide for their needs. Linda Coletta, founder of Houndhaven, expressed the sentiments of their organization. Dad was one of their ". . . beloved volunteers . . . He was helping the Houndhaven dogs right til the end of his life by selling merchandise at PetSmart and at homecoming. Helping the HH dogs was his purpose and passion, and he was so good at it that we nicknamed him 'Money Man' for all the money he raised. Walt was a kind and caring man, and we were blessed to know him. He will be sorely missed at Houndhaven."
We are asking that any donations or gifts you might like to give on his behalf be directed to Houndhaven in honor of my dad Walter Dickstein. We believe this is what he would want - - to continue to help the animals of Houndhaven find new forever homes. To donate to Houndhaven, please go to http://www.houndhaven.org/. The donation should read on behalf of, or in honor of, Walter Dickstein.
Life is very unsettled right now, but I will remember my dad for the laughter he shared, the wisdom he had, the amazing person he was, and the great times we spent together.
With much love to my dad, Steve.
