Thomas Eugene Schriver passed away peacefully on the afternoon of January 29, 2026, in Orlando, Florida, in the arms of his son, Joshua and his wife Tracy. He was 78.
Born to Joe and Verna Schriver in Royal Oak, Michigan, on September 18, 1947, Thomas was the couples' second child, following his sister, Donna. He attended Kimball High School in Royal Oak, graduating in 1965, before matriculating to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. He completed his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 1969.
Upon returning to Metro Detroit, Thomas first worked in the banking field, leading as a branch manager for a decade before transitioning into commercial lending. It was during the latter period that he would miss a tee time and meet the love of his life.
On May 5, 1985, when traffic delayed Thomas's evening round of golf, he met Tracy in an almost empty clubhouse. The prudent banker would lavishly spend the next nine hours talking to her, and the next 37 years by her side. Over their three-year courtship, he experienced many firsts: He jogged hundreds of miles with her for a marathon only she would run. He volunteered pints of blood (ending up unconscious and covered in Red Cross blankets). He followed her into church, despite previously not showing interest in his faith. They both later gave their lives to Jesus which was the center of their relationship.
Thomas asked for her hand in marriage twice, in two years, and she said yes to his second request. They married on August 20, 1988. Thomas and Tracy built a home and life together in Warren, Michigan, and on March 13, 1992, they welcomed the birth of their son, Joshua Thomas Schriver.
From a family of artists, Thomas lived a vibrant life, full of creativity. A percussionist from his youth, he performed with the Oakland County Concert Band in a variety of genres and ensembles. In 1992, his passion for visual arts and reading led him to leave his established career to launch Comics & More, a specialty small business in Madison Heights. Over his 20 years of ownership, he witnessed the industry transform through the death of Superman, the rise of collectible card games, and the expansion of cinematic universes in Hollywood and across the world. He was a visionary who both witnessed a popular culture revolution and lent a hand to its rise.
It was during this time with his father, Joe, he discovered Meals on Wheels, a national nonprofit company that delivers nutritious food to seniors. For 20 years, the pair rode their route through Michigan's harshest weather to help those in great need. Thomas and Joe were faithful. As a child, Joshua participated in the Meals-on-Wheels program alongside his Grandpa Joe and Thomas. This shared experience became a significant and cherished memory.
In 2006, as Joe's health failed, Thomas brought him into his house to care for him in his final months. He considered it an honor. Thomas pledged to his father to continue volunteering with Meals on Wheels, which he did following his Joe's death in 2007. His son, Joshua, will continue this legacy.
In 2015, Thomas and Tracy retired to Clermont, Florida, and bought a home in the Kings Ridge neighborhood. Thomas served as its homeowner's association president for three years. Thomas was about serving others. He would wake in the middle of the night thinking about how he could help someone with an issue they had. Encouragement and serving was who he was. Tracy would lose Thomas for hours and he would be at neighbor's houses to help or welcome them to the neighborhood. Even when he wasn't on the board, he would review the new residents' list and go to welcome them.
It was one of Thomas's greatest joys in life to hold his grandson Otto, born on November 5, 2025, in his arms.
In 2024, Thomas suffered his first stroke, and his second in 2025, both from which he would recover. He inspired those who knew him. On January 13, 2026, Thomas suffered a third, the source of which was discovered to be a hereditary condition. He passed quietly two weeks later surrounded by his family, departing with the strength of his faith and the love of his wife and son.
Thomas is preceded in death by his father, Joe, and his mother, Verna. He is survived by his sister, Donna Ronsaville, her husband, William Ronsaville, and his niece, Rebecca Ronsaville; his wife, Tracy; his son, Joshua, and daughter-in-law, Gabrielle; and his grandson, Otto Thomas, who carries his name.
A memorial service will be held on March 28 at 11:00 at Real Life Christian Church 1501 Steves Road in Clermont, Florida.
A funeral service will be held in Michigan on July 11 at 9am at Saint Joseph Catholic Church at 715 North Lapeer Road in Lake Orion MI 48362
