Tensi B. Shirley of Orlando passed away peacefully March 6, 2016. A political activist in the 60's & 70's, she was known as "Mrs. Democrat" in the local political community and was the first woman elected Chairman of the Orange County Democratic Party. Appointed by Governor Reubin Askew, she served as one of 12 electors to the electoral college from the State of Florida when Jimmy Carter was elected President. She was one of three women invited to the White House for the execution of the SALT Treaty and also served two terms as President of the Florida Democratic County Chairman's Association. Tensi was honored for her service to the community at an Appreciation Luncheon where then Mayor Carl Langford declared June 5, 1976 "Tensi Shirley Day" in the City of Orlando.
Tensi was predeceased by her husband, Jim and is survived by daughter Becky (Mike) Bowers, grandson David and Godchild Sarah Dierking.
The funeral service will begin at 2:45 PM on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 in the Becker Chapel with visitation for thirty minutes prior. Burial will follow in Glen Haven Memorial Park. Although the family requests no flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
