Obituary

Robert (Bob) Harold Shovan, born June 13, 1942 passed away on August 15, 2020 in South Lake Hospital, Clermont, FL due to complications from pneumonia.

Bob was born to Robert A. Shovan and Marie T. Boursaw Shovan in St. Clair, MI and lived there until he graduated from Ferris State College. He was also preceded in death by Michael John and Vern Shovan, brothers.

Bob attended Port Huron Junior College and transferred to Ferris State College, now Ferris State University, receiving a degree in Mechanical Drafting (Die Design).

Bob worked briefly for Boeing before being drafted into the Army. He was stationed in Berlin, Germany. Later, he was one of the first 900 employees at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Batavia, IL, and retired on his birthday in 1997.

He worked for a while at Wilkins Hardware, Saugatuck, MI, and then moved to Florida. He finally worked as a cast member of Walt Disney World where he drove the Animal Kingdom Train, called the Wildlife Express, and later the Friendship Boats in the Epcot Lagoon, even though he could not swim! He retired from Disney in 2012.

Robert (also called Bob "with one O", or Butch) is survived by David Shovan and Jeanne Lavelle, his brother and sister. His partner in life was David A. Bushnell. Bob and Dave were married in Santa Ana, CA on September 11, 2013, but had been together for more than 25 years when they were legally able to marry, and were together for more than 32 years.

Many nieces and nephews and their families remain: Scott & Aaron Shovan from Vern and Margaret Shovan; Rebecca, Jody, and Jamie from David and Sharon Shovan; Shannon Keeley, Sean Keeley, Heather McIntyre, children of Jim and Jeanne Lavelle.

Other survivors: Richard and Barbara Shovan (cousin), and their children Kathy, and Kristopher, and his wife Heather.

Bob loved to travel, whether by plane, train or boat. He and his husband took 25 cruises throughout the Caribbean Sea, the Pacific Ocean and most recently a transatlantic cruise from Southampton (London), England to Belfast, Ireland; Reykjavik, Iceland; St. John, New Brunswick; Halifax, Nova Scotia; and then on to New York City, USA.

Mr. Shovan will be interred at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL with military honors.
