Obituary

Robert Albert Longson passed away peacefully into the arms of his Lord surrounded by his family on Thursday, June 19, 2014. Bob was born in Newark, NJ on February 24, 1924, the son of James and Katharine Zink Longson. He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Adeline Cygon and an older brother, James. He is survived by his wife of 5 years, Suzanne Thompson; step-daughters Vinnette (Dennis) Haycook of New Smyrna Beach, FL and Jenna Thompson of Cape Canaveral, FL.; step-son, Jeffry (Bonnie) Thompson of Clermont, FL. He enjoyed his 6 step-grandchildren and 5 step-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Marjorie "Marge" Farrell of Leesburg, FL. who resides with her daughter Katharine (Joseph) Hoffarth; two nephews, Francis "Frankie" (Mary Lu) Farrell and James "Jamie" (Marie) Farrell both of NJ;two great- nieces, Nicole and Cheryl; 3 great-great nieces and 1 great-great nephew. Bob attended schools in Newark, Livingston, and West Orange NJ. He graduated in 1942 and then enlisted in the Navy. He served on the USS Pennsylvania. He was appointed Sr.Naval Aviator on the USS Vicksburg. Following his discharge in December 1945, he attended Newark College of Engineering and received his associate Geo-Technical engineering degree. He worked for Randolph Township as a construction field inspector. He then worked for the NJ testing laboratories as a soil inspector and worked on a major interchange for the NJ turnpike and Garden State Parkway. He and Frank Lehr were partners in Analytical Subsurface Investigations Inc. for many years prior to his retirement. Bob was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Boonton, NJ. He was an active member of the Walter J. Barrett Council 1954 for over 25 years and served as a Grand Knight. He was very committed and assisted in the Dale Carnegie Training course for many years. Bob loved his retirement years in Florida. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed the sun and his pool. Becker Funeral Home in Clermont, FL is in charge of arrangements. A memorial service is planned for Thursday,, June 26 at 11:00 at the funeral home followed by a luncheon at Gabby' Event and Catering Facility in Clermont. Interment will be on Friday June 27 at 11:30 at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to the Cornerstone Hospice of Lake County, FL. A memorial service will be held in New Jersey at a later date.
