Michael W. Aube Obituary

July 17, 1950 – November 29, 2024

Michael W. Aube, 74, of Clermont, Florida, passed away on November 29, 2024, after a brief illness, surrounded by the love of his family. Born in Biddeford, Maine, to Edmond F. Aube and Germaine Roy Aube, Michael's life was one of unwavering dedication to his family, community, and country.

Michael grew up in Saco, Maine, and attended Thornton Academy, graduating in 1968. He went on to Boston College (Class of 1972) and earned lifelong friends and treasured memories. An enthusiastic BC football fan for life, Michael, affectionately known as "Aub," loved hosting the "Aube's Eagles Nest" tailgates with his brother Eric. Most importantly, while at BC, Stephen Loughlin introduced Michael to his younger sister, Marian Loughlin, who became Michael's greatest love. They were married on July 7, 1979. Their 45 years together were a testament to a deep and enduring bond.

After college, Michael embarked on a career in public service and politics. Whether in  Washington, D.C., or Maine, serving in the offices of Senators George Mitchell, Ed Muskie, and Governor John McKernan, his commitment to improving his community was evident in everything he did. It was that value that brought Michael and Marian back to Maine in 1981, where he worked with Eastern Maine Development Corporation. Michael's leadership extended to numerous roles, including serving as Commissioner of Maine's Department of Economic and Community Development, a member of the Maine State Board of Education, and State Director of USDA Rural Development.  Michael served on the Bangor City Council in the late 1990s and as Mayor in 2000. A champion for his community, Michael received numerous accolades, culminating with the Norbert X. Dowd Award in 2019. He was proud to see the completion of the Cross Insurance Center as a civic gathering place for generations to come.

While he was recognized for his many professional accomplishments, his proudest achievement was his family. Whether attending the father-daughter dance with Laura, attending sporting events with Michael, exploring Maine with host son Gustavo, or together with Marian hosting New Year's Eve dinners for dear friends who became family, Arline and Richard Caron, Michael's genuine care for others and commitment to fostering their best was his true legacy.

After retiring, Michael and Marian relocated to Florida to be closer to their grandchildren. As "Pepere," Michael found immense joy in the smiles of Kendall, Michael, and Dylan, whether playing in the pool, sharing stories, or his grandchildren simply falling asleep on his lap.

Maine always held his heart, and he loved visiting every summer to see friends and family. He especially loved the annual tradition of the 'Aube Family Lobster Bake.'

Michael is survived by his wife Marian; his children Michael F. Aube (Kaitlin Ambrogio), Laura Staples (Bret Staples), and host son Gustavo Burkett (Kyle Burkett); his grandchildren Kendall, Michael, and Dylan Staples; his siblings Patricia Aube Doiron (Robert), Denise Aube (Scot Greber), and Eric Aube (Sherry); his in-laws Stephen Loughlin (Carla) and Carolyn Cole (Douglas); and numerous nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, brother-in-law, Michael Loughlin, and dear friend, Richard Caron.

Michael will forever be remembered for his selfless desire to better the world around him, his ability to make anyone laugh, and his love for those dearest to him.
