Obituary

Mayra Jeanette Lugo Peña, born on January 1, 1956, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, transitioned to the afterlife with the same unwavering faith and strength that defined her life here. From an early age, Mayra carried a deep, undying faith in God, one that guided her through every chapter of her story.
She migrated to New York City as a child, growing up on the Upper West Side, then raised her family in Yonkers, New York, and later retired in the Dominican Republic, where she loved to be. In her final chapter, she settled in Clermont, Florida and was elated to have both her daughters and grandchildren live near her.
Mayra's final spoken words, "I have faith," reflect the unbreakable spirit that inspired everyone around her. She is survived by her beloved mother, Ramona Peña; her cherished daughters, Leiby Clarissa and Joanne Elizabeth; and her foster children Vanessa, Benjamin, Jennifer, and Joseph (Joey). She was a devoted grandmother to Leslie, Angel (AJ / Bebecito), Merilin, JonMykal, and Leila, and a proud great-grandmother to Liam Ramon and Julius Angel. Mayra is also survived by her loving sisters Dennys and Evelyn, along with her paternal siblings Dagoberto, Daisy, Faustino, Maximo, Angelo, Alex, Jack, and Michael. Her extended family of dozens of  nieces, nephews and cousins were blessed by her patience and kindness, as she was an angel on earth for each of them. She loved her family with a fierce passion for them all

In heaven with her are her father, Maximo and brother Francisco.

Mayra adored her grandchildren and daughters, who were the light of her life, and her compassion and love extended to the many foster children and little ones she welcomed into her heart and home. Mayra dedicated 20 years to serving others as Administrative Clerk with the New York State Department of Labor. Her warmth and humor will be dearly missed; she had a special love for comedies, romantic movies, and her favorite Lifetime and Hallmark films. One of her favorite movies, Life Stinks, brought laughter and coined her signature phrase, "Are my 11's up?"

Today, we say, "Yes, Mom, your 11's are up." She leaves a legacy of faith, hope and love, but the greatest of these is LOVE. Her smile and laughter will forever remain in our hearts.

Honoring our mother's legacy Our mother, Mayra was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) only six days before she passed. Though she fought cancer with all her strength and beat it, it was GBS that ultimately overwhelmed her body. In honor of her courage and faith, and to help others facing similar struggles, our family has chosen to support three organizations that symbolize her journey and her spirit. GBS-CIDP Foundation International is one of the organizations our family will support in honor of our mom. Wherever you are, you can make a difference in her memory. One of these causes is the GBS-CIDP Foundation International, which relies on the generosity of donors to fund crucial work. Contributions support access to early, accurate diagnosis, affordable treatment, and dependable patient support services, providing hope and resources for those affected by GBS, CIDP, and related conditions.
