Obituary

Maurice H. Harwood

October 21, 1952 - October 6, 2022

Maurice (Maury) Harwood, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away Thursday, October 6, 2022, due to cardiac complications.  He was born on October 21, 1952, to Herbert D. and Clare P. Harwood in Petersburg, VA.

Maury attended St. Jane de Chantal School in Bethesda, Maryland and was a proud graduate of Gonzaga College Catholic High School in Washington, D.C.  Prior to earning his Bachelor's in Finance from University of Maryland, College Park, he became a classical scholar, known to regularly quote Latin, Greek, and German texts. He later earned a Master of Business Administration from George Washington University and a Masters of Science in Computer Engineering from University of Pennsylvania.

His career in the federal government spanned over 30 years, and he met his wife Bernadette while serving as an auditor for the Internal Revenue Service in Miami, Florida. As an Artificial Intelligence Specialist, he was recognized for his knowledge of Data Mining and received numerous awards for implementing technology that saved billions of dollars for the U.S. government.

Maury will be remembered as an avid sports enthusiast, playing golf into retirement and tennis earlier in life. A native of the D.C. area, he loved Redskins (now Commanders) football and enjoyed many hours coaching youth sports for his three children.  Always the life of the party, he was often chanting Rolling Stones lyrics, reenacting scenes from The Blues Brothers, or reciting quotes from Clint Eastwood movies. Maury valued spending time with his family, especially with his four grandchildren, whom he adored. A man of great faith, he was a devout Roman Catholic and active member of the congregation at St. Francis of Assisi in Derwood, Maryland, and most recently a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament in Clermont, FL.

He is survived by his wife, Bernadette Harwood; children Norah Hibbits (Justin Hibbits), H. Patrick Harwood (Amber Stephens), Monica Daly (Tom Daly); grandchildren Clara Hibbits, Emily Hibbits, Holly Harwood and H. Stephens Harwood; and his siblings Patricia McGuire, Joseph Harwood, and Kathryn Powell.  He is predeceased by his brother, James Harwood.
