IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Matthew Christopher
Tomberg
January 16, 2003 – December 8, 2024
US Coast Guard Seaman Matthew Christopher Tomberg (21) of Clermont, Florida, has been called home to meet his Savior. Our sweet baby boy was born on a cold January morning in 2003 in Humble, Texas. Matthew was a proud Roman Catholic and was baptized as an infant at St. Martha Catholic Church (Kingwood, Texas), received First Holy Communion at St. John Vianney Catholic Church (Houston, Texas), and was confirmed at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church (Clermont, Florida).
Matthew is survived by his parents, Michael & Gina Tomberg of Clermont, Florida, as well as four siblings, 1LT Daniel Tomberg (US Army 82nd Airborne, Fayetteville, North Carolina), Michaela, Leah, and Luke. Also survived by paternal grandparents, PaPa Melvyn Tomberg and Grammy Dorothy Beckstrom as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and shipmates. Matthew was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Pop Ernest & Grammy Catherine LoFurno.
Matthew was a blessing to his parents, siblings, and all who knew him. His heart and generosity knew no bounds. He was very concerned about the poor, weak, and downtrodden among us. Matthew earned his Boy Scout Eagle Rank at 13 and graduated at the top of his class at East Ridge High School in Clermont, Florida. He went on earn his Bachelor of Arts in History (Summa Cum Laude) at age 19 from the University of Central Florida. When he was offered a full scholarship at age 20 to attend law school at Arizona State University, he declined in order to join the United States Coast Guard and help those in need.
Enjoying our National Parks was one of the great joys of Matthew's life. He enjoyed his time working at both Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and Acadia National Park in Maine during his college years. His military leave during the summer of 2024 was spent hiking and camping at Yellowstone and Badlands National Park in South Dakota. His phone calls home were filled with excitement and the dream of settling in Wyoming one day after he completed his military service. Matthew was also particularly moved by the plight of the Quileute Tribe on whose reservation he was stationed in La Push, Washington. On his days off, Matthew could be found surfing on his longboard and in his wetsuit in the rough seas of the Pacific or volunteering at the Port Angeles Food Bank. When he thought that nobody was looking, he would slip money or food into the hands of the local homeless whom he had come to befriend in his neighborhood.
