Obituary

Mary Bowman of Clermont, Florida died suddenly at home preparing the Thanksgiving meal on November 26, 2020.  She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Clem Bowman and brother Dinny Moran and survived by daughter Tamara, son-in-law Andy Bullaro and grandsons Kaden and Collin, son Matt Bowman, siblings Judy (Ray Sgoff and niece Christine), Jim Moran (Susan Gordon), Kevin Moran, Nora Gallagher (nephews Ian and Collin and niece Kate), mother-in-law Midge Bowman, sister-in law Annie Amendola and brother-in-law Andrew Bowman (Roberta).
Mary grew up in a large Irish family in the small town of East Nassau in upstate New York.  This renaissance woman met her renaissance husband Clem at the University of Pennsylvania where she sang in the glee club, swam on the synchronized swimming team and worked summers at White Grass Dude Ranch in Jackson, Wyoming to help pay for college.
After graduation, Physical Therapist Mary and Teacher Clem ventured off to work in Miami, marry, scuba in Key Largo, live on a boat and work in St. Croix, return to Key Largo, and run Coral Reef Flying Services. Then Mary helped Clem through Medical School starting in the Dominican Republic and finishing in Miami.
The family moved to Clermont in 1988 where Mary continued her career in Physical Therapy and Clem rose to medical director of the ER at Health Central.  Ever the adventurers, Mary and son Matt, skilled carpenter, drove cross country several times, including Alaska and back.  Daughter Tamara followed in her mother's footsteps and became a physical therapist.  The family traveled nationwide to Clem's Soaring contests. Tragically, Clem died in a glider accident at a Soaring contest in 1999 while preparing for his second World contest as a member of the USA Soaring Team.
It was then that Mary became an avid birdwatcher and talented painter of flora, fauna, and family.  She savored the pleasant summers with family and friends at Otter Point on the St. Lawrence River.  She dreamt up "citizen science" projects with her beloved grandsons. But come winter, she was happy to return to Clermont for biking, birding and cutthroat card games with neighbors.
Mary's wit and storytelling were legendary. She lit up a room, was everybody's friend, and gave to so may causes, like Audubon, Second Harvest, and Save the River.  She will be fondly remembered, and sorely missed by many.  Mary was a shining light of optimism, curiosity in all subjects, and exuded a zest for life to which we all should aspire.
