MARJORIE FRANCES BATTERSBY, 87, of Clermont, Florida died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Thursday, March 17, 2016.
Mrs. Battersby was born Marjorie Mary McGowan in Attleboro, Massachusetts to John and Mary McGowan. She married the late Robert H. Battersby on May 31, 1952 at St. Mary's Church in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. She relocated in 1964 to Flint, Michigan, where she raised her family, and retired to Clermont, Florida in 1979.
Mrs. Battersby's life encompassed many interests and accomplishments, but her proudest achievement was raising and supporting her children. She was a school secretary at Holy Redeemer in Flint, Michigan and full-time volunteer Homeroom Mother while her children attended school there. She was a gracious hostess and would open her home for parties or activities that supported her children's interests.
Mrs. Battersby was is survived by her three children: Mary C. Battersby of Clermont, Robert H. Battersby of Winter Garden, and Barbara Battersby of Orlando. She is also survived by two granddaughters: Jessica Thompson (Josh) of Tampa, Florida and Caitlin Rouch (Devon) of Chimacum, Washington.
When she and her husband moved to Clermont, Mrs. Battersby worked part-time in the Clermont Citrus Tower Gift Shop, and she and her husband became active parishioners at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Mrs. Battersby was a Past President of the Clermont Chapter of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, and a member of the club's Nightbloomer and Hummingbird circles for more than 30 years. She loved flowers and flower arranging. She was an advocate for the club's Wekiva Youth Camp and SEEK programs. She was a volunteer for the South Lake Hospital Pink Ladies and the Orlando Opera Company, and an ardent bridge player with many local groups.
Mrs. Battersby enjoyed all styles of music, but her favorite artist was Rod Stewart and she proudly boasted she'd attended every live Rod Stewart Concert presented in Central Florida.
Visitation and funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 23, 2016 beginning at 10 am at Blessed Sacrament Church in Clermont, Florida. A lunch celebrating her life will be hosted by the friends and family immediately after in the Church's social hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
