Obituary

Margaret Louise Gray
December 24, 1947 - April 17, 2022
Margaret "Peg" Gray, 74, passed away on Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022 in Orlando with her family by her side following a brief illness.
Peg was born on December 24, 1947 in Pittsburgh, PA, the oldest daughter of William and Louise (Miller) Hughes. Forged by the Steel City, she never abandoned her yinzer roots. She remained a die hard fan of Pittsburgh sports, with particular soft spots for both the Steelers and Penguins. She later extended that fandom to include the University of Florida, a "Gator Mom" who proudly watched both of her children graduate from UF. Peg earned her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Pittsburgh and, ever a lover of learning, later went back to school to get her Masters of Education from Florida Atlantic University while also working full-time as a teacher and mother of two.
Education was her lifelong pursuit, as she taught all ranges of subject matter and secondary grades, first in Pennsylvania and later in Florida. She spent the last 21 years of her career at Spanish River Christian School in Boca Raton, playing a formative role in the school's creation of a middle school while teaching, then becoming Middle School Principal in 2005. She retired from SRCS in 2016 and moved closer to her children and grandchildren, spending her final years in Clermont.
Peg had several passions in her life, but none topped the joy she derived from motherhood. She poured her mind, body and soul into her two children and took immeasurable joy from watching them grow and thrive as adults. All who crossed her path would attest to her dry sense of humor and quick wit. She enjoyed a finely baked Chicken Parmesan, as well as the occasional cheeseburger - "Just the meat and cheese on the bun, please." She enjoyed broadening her horizons, both literally and figuratively, and her love of animals, particularly dogs, began at a young age. She will be missed dearly by her beloved pup, Maddie.
Peg was preceded in death by her husband, William K. Gray, Jr., whom she wed on July 1, 1978 in Philadelphia, PA. She is survived by her two children, Will (Lindsay) Gray and Lauren (Clint) Blackwelder, as well as her sister, Pam (Paul) DeBaldo. Additionally mourning her loss are the grandchildren that became her beacon of light in her final years: Kelly Blackwelder (5), Charlotte Gray (3), Nathan Blackwelder (3) and Amelia Gray (6 months).
A memorial service will be held to honor her life at 1pm on Sunday, May 1 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Clermont, FL. All who wish to celebrate her life are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to the Purple Leash Project .
