IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Leona C
Gardiner
February 11, 1950 – September 2, 2024
Leona Christine Shobe-Gardiner passed away peacefully on September 2, 2024, in Tavares, Florida, surrounded by her loving family and friends, after a short battle with Lung Cancer.
Born on February 11, 1950, in Washington, DC, Leona was the daughter of Christine Shobe (née Allen) and John E. Shobe Sr. She graduated from Bladensburg High School in Maryland in 1968. Her life was a tapestry of love, creativity, and community service. On August 8, 1991, she became engaged to her soulmate, John G. Gardiner Sr., and they were married on January 2, 1992, in Florida. Leona was preceded in death by her beloved husband.
Leona was a proud member of South Lake Presbyterian Church and later the Howey in the Hills Community Church. Her passion for community extended to her involvement with the VFW, Moose Lodge, and American Legion. She was known for her incredible work with the church's youth group and her devotion to helping others.
You could always find Leona outside in her studio making some sort of pottery, in her garden, or in her bikini in the pool; with her beloved dog Coco right by her side.
A talented artist, Leona's love for pottery was matched only by her dedication to gardening. As a master gardener, she received numerous awards, and her artistic talents were evident in the pottery classes she taught. Leona had a profound respect for Native American culture and often attended Powwows when she lived in Maryland. She also enjoyed collecting antiques and researching her family genealogy, pursuits that brought her immense joy and satisfaction. Leona was a retired AT&T employee and a valued member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Leona's family was her greatest joy. She is survived by her stepdaughter, Kitty Oliver (Willis); her grandchildren Ashlynn Andrews (Brandon) and Shane Taylor; her great-grandchildren Callie and Sophia Andrews, and Ezra Taylor; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers John E. Shobe Jr. and Lawrence E. Shobe, and her grandson Scott "Scottie" Michael Taylor Jr.
Leona had a profound love for animals, especially her beloved dachshund, Coco Chanel, and her cat, Shadow. She was an avid traveler, enjoyed spending time with friends and family, and was deeply passionate about her fibromyalgia support community.
Leona's warmth, creativity, and unwavering love will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew her.
