Obituary

Kirk Layfield, 50, of Minneola, FL passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2016. Kirk was born on October 18, 1965 in Gainesville, FL, son of Charles and Jan. He was a lifelong resident of Central Florida, graduating from the University of Florida in 1993 with a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology. Kirk later went on to obtain his PhD in Sports Nutrition. From 1991 to 1993, Kirk served as Assistant Strength/Conditioning Coach for the University of Florida Football program. Following his passion for Exercise and Sports Sciences, Kirk worked with various Central Florida healthcare organizations as an Exercise Physiologist and Personal Trainer until pursuing a career in Fire Services in 2004. Kirk served as a volunteer firefighter/EMT with the City of Minneola and, after earning his Paramedic license, Kirk worked as a Firefighter/Paramedic with the City of Leesburg. Most recently, Kirk served as Firefighter/Paramedic for the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority at Orlando International Airport. In addition to his full-time Fire Service duties, Kirk was an EMS instructor at Central Florida Fire Academy and Osceola County Schools, as well as a Basic Life Support Instructor for American Heart Association.

Alongside his academic and professional achievements, Kirk was well known and respected for his accomplishments in the motocross arena. Beginning a life-long passion for riding at the age of 7, Kirk joined the ranks of AMA Professional Motocross and Supercross at the age of 16. Just some of his accolades during his 22-year pro riding career include 3 Amateur National Championships, 15+ Regional Championships, 20+ State Championships and first place in the 2011 World Police and Fire Games Motocross events. Throughout his 43 years of riding motocross, Kirk not only added titles and trophies, but he trained, mentored and sponsored numerous up and coming riders.

Kirk is survived by his loving wife, Heather; son, Christian; mother, Jan Williams (Billy) Heagy of Ocala, FL; father, Charles Layfield of Ozella, FL; brothers, Kelly (Karla) Layfield and Brad (Bonnie) Layfield both of Ocala, FL; Nieces and Nephews, Luke, Loren, Matthew, Lindsey and Meghan Layfield, Andrew and Nicole Fernung, Colin, Kalina, Kendall, Sandra and Judson Hayes; Kyndall and Brayden DySard; countless friends, colleagues and extended Fire Service and Motocross family who will miss him immensely.

A Celebration of Kirk's life will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Real Life Christian Church located at 1501 Steve's Road, Clermont, FL 34711. The family requests in lieu of flowers, please send memorials in Kirk's name to any of the following foundations:
