Kathleen "Kate" Whalen, 88, of Clermont FL, was called to heaven on January 14, 2025. Born in NY on September 10, 1936. Kate grew up in Baldwin and lived with her children in Seaford NY until September 2000 when she moved to sunny Clermont, FL.

‍She was a loving and devoted mother to Kerry (Eric) Landau, Tom (Karen) Whalen and Kris Whalen who left us way too soon. Loving grandmother to Sarah, Patrick and Jack.

As a single mother, Kate put herself through school and graduated from Nassau Community College in Garden City NY with an A.A.S. nursing degree in June of 1973. She continued her nursing education at the New York Institute of Technology, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1984. She started her nursing career at Massapequa General Hospital and eventually wound up in the OR. Her next stop was Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, a large teaching hospital where she was an OR nurse until she retired in 2000. It was at that point she decided to leave the cold Long Island winters and head to sunny Florida along with her with her two pups, Misty and Herbie.

Once settled in her new home in Clermont she embraced the wonderful weather and new community at King's Ridge. She quickly assimilated to the Florida lifestyle and made many new friends. It was at King's Ridge where she met Jim Purvis, her beloved partner of 20+ years until his passing in December 2023.

Once you are a nurse, you are a nurse for life, so it did not take long before Kate took a part time position as a first aid nurse at Disney - which she said was the best job she ever had.

Kate enjoyed a long and happy life loving her family, friends, quilting, yoga, her wine, the beach, dancing with the Royalettes, cruising with Jim, shopping at Chicos and lunching with the ladies of the various organizations and volunteer groups she became a part of while living out the later years of her life.
