IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Anthony
Scigliano, Sr.
August 25, 1935 – April 7, 2022
Dr. John Anthony Scigliano, Sr. Obituary
John Scigliano passed away peacefully in his own bed at home on April 7, 2022. Father Augusto came to the home on April 6, 2022, for John's final blessing. About 5:30 a.m., on April 7, 2022, before they got ready for breakfast, John and Virginia shared a kiss and hug and made plans to watch, later that afternoon, the Masters' Golf Tournament which John loved. When Virginia returned to John's bedside to await the arrival of the Hospice/Caregiver team, Virginia discovered John had been welcomed into heaven to be with God.
John was a special person, and a phenomenal, unique, and brilliant man. John was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. August 25, 1935. During his life, he was blessed with two beautiful loving sisters (Theresa and Debby), a wonderful brother (Larry) and his nephew Lonnie, his wife and family of four children, his loving parents (John R Scigliano and Marie Kinskey), a family of three delightful boys (John Jr., Jeff, and Jaime), six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
At an incredibly early age John was a child actor in many programs on KDKA radio station where his father served as an engineer. John always exhibited great artistic talent even at an early age doing all the artistic drawings for the nuns for class. His many paintings are exhibited in the home.
John was loved by all. As an adult he knew he wanted to be a jet plane fighter pilot. He realized that dream when he became a valued member of the U.S. Marine Corps. After his military career, John continued to accomplish many things. At the time he was a successful actor at the Pittsburgh Playhouse. Some often thought he could have become another Tyron Power or Al Pacino.
After earning his Ph.D. in Educational Administration, John began his 40-year professional career with Nova Southeastern University, except for a four-year professorship at Kent State University where he was the founder and Director of the Center for Higher Education. While at Nova Southeastern University, he developed what has been referred to as the greatest innovation of the 20 th century, The Ed.D. National Degree Program for Community College Faculty founding the Center for Higher Education at Nova Southeastern University. At that time external degree education was considered to be diabolical and necessitated lawsuits with many states to even offer the program in their state. The nation's greatest professors joined John in this venture serving on his National Board and teaching in the program. This did not stop John as the nation moved into computers, he went on to develop the Center for Management Information Systems offering both Master's and Ph.D. degrees. He loved to teach and was creative unbelievably.
For 46 years of their married life John, and Virginia, in addition to professional travel, made time for their "career" of enjoying every minute they could at Disney and cherish their ten trips by auto train to Williamsburg, Virginia. Williamsburg enabled them to share their love of American history and be involved more in immersed learning about the phenomenal history of this great nation. When travel became physically challenging, the trips around the world continued at home via YouTube.
Amazingly John had time for his love for golf too. He was a fantastic golfer. The President of Nova Southeastern University, Abraham Fischler, who was John's mentor, gave him the nickname of "The Reader" because John always had more than a handful of books with him wherever he went. His love of reading and his unique ability to absorb, retain, and apply the knowledge and creativity gained from his readings, all culminated in the educational programs he developed and directed for Nova Southeastern University.
John will always be with and a part of us all that were so fortunate to be blessed to have been a part of his glamourous and most successful life. Wow what a man. Thank you, God, for blessing and sharing him with us for 86 years.
