IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Joseph
Schwarz
October 23, 1927 – December 28, 2022
John Joseph Schwarz, 95, of Clermont, FL, passed away peacefully on the morning of December 28, 2022.
John was born on October 23, 1927 to Walter and Annie (nee Forsythe) Schwarz in Philadelphia, PA. His parents moved to Springfield, PA where he was a Boy Scout, and worked on the many farms in the area and at the local hangout Charlie's Hamburger stand as a teenager. He earned a varsity letter as a member of his winning high school basketball team. Shortly after John graduated from Springfield High School he served in the U. S. Navy near the end of WWII. John was a Storekeeper Third Class and received the American Area Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal for his service.
After the war, John entered the field of Insurance Claims Adjustments. He worked his way up through the ranks of the Kemper Insurance Company to Divisional Claims Manager, from where he retired at age 62. His goal upon retirement was to move to Florida for the warmer weather and a chance to play golf year round, which is exactly what he did for more than 30 years.
John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved to regale his family and friends with his stories of the interesting people he met and the fun places he visited. He was an avid Boy Scout leader for his son's scout troops and was an all around sports fan for all of his children. Some of his best days were spent with his friends on the golf courses he played up and down the east coast and all the way to Hawaii.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Annie; his sisters, Edna Gilligan, Joan O'Reilly , Mildred Irwin and Mary Savage, his brother, Walter Schwarz, his youngest son Jerrold Schwarz and his former wife and mother of his children, Anna M. (Nancy) Schwarz.
John is survived by his wife, Retha Mae (nee Grindle); his children John (Beverly) Schwarz, Mary Ellen Gaul, James Schwarz, Anne Marie (Guy) Matteo; his grandchildren J.R. (Christine) Schwarz, Brianne (Andrew) Totsch, Kenneth (Erin) Gaul, Elizabeth Gaul, Christian Schwarz, Michael Matteo, and Michele Matteo; his great-grandchildren Allison and Amelia Schwarz and Alexander and Evan Totsch.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in his hometown of Springfield, PA. Donations can be made to Cornerstone Hospice Foundation, 2445 Lane Park Rd., Tavares, FL 32778 and Little Sisters of the Poor 5300 Chester Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19143.
