John Alton Hughes, 80, of Clermont, FL passed away Friday, November 16, 2012 at the Mike Conley Hospice House. John was born on January 16, 1932 in Brunswick, GA, the son of Isaac and Ida Irene (nee Boone) Hughes. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War after graduating from high school. After the military John first attended the University of Florida, where he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity, before graduating from the University of Miami. John was a past banker and owner of a real estate agency as well as an oil and lube business. John was a member of the Optimists, Jaycees and a Past President and Lt. Governor for the Clermont Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Clermont.
John is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Joanne; children, Glenda Hughes Johns of Green Cove Springs, FL, Timothy John Hughes of Clermont and Page Hughes of Leesburg, FL; step-brothers, Thomas Core, Robert Core and Bill Core all of Orlando, FL and step-sister, Jo-Ann McMillan of Miami, FL; 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2PM Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, with military honors being rendered.
A Celebration of John's life will be held at 2PM Sunday, January 13, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church, Clermont.
