Obituary

John Alfred Barney went to be with his Lord on June 4 th , 2019.  Son of the late Earle and Elva Barney of Rumney, NH and four brothers Joel, Rodney, Martin and Linwood Barney.   He attended grade school in Rumney Depot and high school in Plymouth, NH.  He graduated from Providence Bible College in Barrington, RI in 1952 with a B.A. in Bible.  He married Jessie Bennett on January 9, 1954 and in May of that year they left for the Belgian Congo as missionaries under the Africa Inland Mission (AIM).  In 1961, their young family of 5 was evacuated to Kenya due to the Congo rebellion; they served there until 1977.  John served for 52 years with AIM.  He served for 6 years in the Belgian Congo, 16 years in Kenya and 30 years as the director of Stewardship and an Area Representative for AIM in New England.  He also served on the Board of Directors for the W.I.H.S. radio station in Middletown, CT as well as a board member of the Christian Stewardship Council for many years.  He was an active member of Calvary Church in West Hartford, CT.  He led mission tours to Kenya for 17 years and introduced many people to the opportunities available there for support and service through missions.

In February 2002, his wife Jessie entered Heaven.  Their home was full of laughter and joyful service to the Lord.  They were well known for their consistent hospitality to friends and strangers alike.  It was not uncommon for John to call Jessie at the last minute to tell her there were 10 people coming for dinner!  She was always prepared.  He was an avid New England Sports Fan, especially the UCONN women's basketball team.  The grandchildren fondly called them "Grampa's Girls."

God blessed John in February 2004 with his second wife, Norma Mason. They lived in Windsor, CT and then moved to Media, the AIM Retirement Center in Minneola, FL in 2012.  Together they served the Lord with music and prayer in a local nursing home and to their friends at Media.  They loved their years there and John lovingly cared for Norma the last 6 months of her life before she entered heaven in Sept. 2018.

John and Jessie have three children: His son Paul (Debra) Barney of Live Oak, FL has 3 children: Kimberly Barney of Fort Edward, NY, PJ Barney of Aransas Pass, TX, and Jonathan (Danielle) Barney of Schroon Lake, NY. His daughter Jan (Lloyd) Syvertsen of Greenwich CT has 4 sons: Daniel (Kellie) Syvertsen of Spofford, NH, Michael (Marlena) Syvertsen of Niceville, FL, David (Ashley) Syvertsen of Oakland, NJ, and Aaron (Rochelle) Syvertsen of Ridgewood, NJ.  His daughter Eunice (Scott) Paulson of Waxhaw, NC has 4 children: Christopher (Jessica) Paulson of Melbourne, Australia, Ashley (Kyle) Jurado of Durham, NC, Alexandra (Billy) Riddle of Arua, Uganda, and Brandon Paulson of Waxhaw, NC.   John lovingly prayed daily for all of his own children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren while also embracing and including Paul's stepchildren and grandchildren along with Norma's 6 children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He considered himself a man blessed beyond measure. John was proud to announce the birth of their combined 48th great-grandchild just 2 days before he entered heaven.
