Obituary

Joanne Louise Tormey, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2025.

She was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Joseph and Louise Mucemci and was raised in Borough Park in a close-knit Italian family. Despite losing her father at a young age, Joanne's resilience and intelligence shone early—she excelled in school, skipped a grade, and graduated ahead of her class.

In 1965, she met the love of her life, Thomas Tormey, at a movie theater in Brooklyn. They married and built a life grounded in love, hard work, and devotion to their family. Joanne balanced her early career as an administrative assistant with raising their three sons—Christopher, Brian, and Thomas Jr.—and later worked for the City of New York.

Joanne and Thomas created countless cherished memories for their family, from summers at their beloved Breezy Point bungalow to vacations in Amish Country, Dutch Wonderland, Europe, Bermuda and Disney World. Determined to fulfill her own educational dreams, Joanne earned her bachelor's degree from the College of New Rochelle and later her master's in psychology from Brooklyn College—all while raising her family.

After retiring from city service, Joanne began a second career as a Pre-K teacher at St. Anselm's in Brooklyn, where she shared her warmth, humor, and famous cupcakes with generations of students who remember her fondly.

In later years, her greatest joy came from being a grandmother to James and Cole, showering them with love, support, and her signature thoughtfulness. Joanne and Thomas built their life from scratch, providing everything for their family through determination and unconditional love.

Joanne is survived by her three sons, Christopher (and his husband Donald), Brian (and his partner Eyad), and Thomas Jr. (and his wife Dana); and her grandsons James and Cole. She joins her beloved husband, Thomas Sr., who passed away earlier this year, in eternal rest.

Her family will forever remember her kindness, strength, and selfless devotion. Joanne's legacy lives on in the lives she touched and the love she gave so freely.

Rest in peace, Mom—together again with Dad.
