Obituary

Joanne Ellen Simms, of Clermont, Florida, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 25, 2026. She was born on June 30, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois.

Joanne was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Sylvester George Simms.

She worked for many years as a telephone operator for the Chicago Tribune. Joanne and her husband resided in Northern Indiana and Joliet, Illinois, before relocating to St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1989. In 2019, Joanne moved to Clermont, Florida, where she continued to enjoy time with family and friends.

A devoted Christian, Joanne faithfully served her church communities. She sang in the choir and volunteered at the food pantries of Northside Baptist Church and 5th Avenue Baptist Church. Her faith guided her life and inspired her commitment to helping others.

Joanne is survived by her loving daughters, Marie Eddy (David), Paula Miller (Holly), and Pam Heins (Mike); her cherished grandchildren, Jennifer, Brett, Erin, Holly, and Kelly; and her treasured great-grandchildren, Apple, Lola, Summer, Lincoln, Steven, Caleb, Zachary, Addison, Ezra, Cali, Kaylee, Gracie, Cameron, Cora, and Scarlet.

Joanne loved her family deeply, served God faithfully, and found joy in helping others. She also enjoyed traveling and especially loved cruising. Her kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

A life well-lived is a legacy of joy and a lasting memory our grateful hearts will treasure.

Burial will take place at a later date at Bay Pines National Cemetery in St. Petersburg, Florida.
