IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jennie
Porcelli
August 22, 1931 – July 12, 2016
Giovanna "Jennie" Bruschetta was born on August 22, 1931 in Belmonte Mezzagno, Sicily to Anthony and Sigismonda Bruschetta.
As a little girl, she experienced the horrors of war and went without proper shoes and often had to beg for food. She came to America when she was just 12 years old and went to live in St. Louis, Missouri where her father had some friends. In 1949, she moved to New York City and began working in a garment factory. Through a coworker, she met Michael "Mike" Porcelli. They courted, fell in love and were married on September 28, 1952. Immediately following their wedding, her new husband was sent over to serve in the Army during the Korean War. He returned in 1953 and shortly after they had a daughter, Rosanne, in May 1954. They settled into a small apartment in the Bronx, NY and after several years, they bought their first home on Powell Avenue. Family was always close by, Mike's parents lived across the street, and Jennie's were in Brooklyn. In 1962, their second daughter, Michelle, was born on September 25th. Four years later they had a son, Michael, born on May 29th.
One thing was evident in all the years they were together. They were truly in love! This was a loving couple and Jennie was a wonderful mother/homemaker while Mike worked and provided for the family. In 1970, they moved to Bardonia in Rockland County, NY where they lived for 18 years.
Jennie and Mike had an extraordinary life together, filled with the joys of family and friends. We can recall many holiday parties and events that were hosted at the Porcelli home. Years of Christmas's, Easters, Thanksgivings, etc. spent in the company of so many loved ones at their home on Glen Drive,
When Mike retired, they moved to Venice, Florida. Here they were enjoying retirement life with friends and family moving close by. Eventually, they moved to the Kings Ridge community in Clermont in 2005.
Mike died suddenly on August 30, 2008, and Jennie was devastated. But being the strong, spiritual and determined woman that she was Jennie knew life had to go on and she still had her three children who adored her. She was determined to be there for them and her children for her. Jennie and Michael were married 57 years when her beloved passed.
In her last years, Jennie was cared for by her children and was very happy living in an independent living community. She had many friends there and everyone loved her. But as much as we cared for her, she cared for us too. She was always there for her children and grandchildren.
Her passing leaves a big void in the lives of her family, who adored and loved her. But being spiritual as well, we believe that God was calling her home. Her job was done and it was time to be reunited to her husband, parents and brother on July 12, 2016.
Her sister, Annie Greco, who lives in Staten Island, NY, survives her. As well as her three children, Jennie also had three grandchildren. Richard M Saleeby, Giovanna Porcelli and Michaela Porcelli. She will be missed very much, but we will always cherish the beautiful memories we shared together.
