Obituary

James Lewis Pond, 70, passed away peacefully Thursday, September 24, at South Lake Hospital in Clermont, Florida, after a short illness. His son and sister were at his side. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 18, 1943, to Henry Lewis Pond and Selma Drabing Pond. After graduating from North Central High School, where he enjoyed discussing politics, and studying a year at Purdue University, he headed south to became a dedicated worker in the civil rights movement, including the Selma march. Jim spent most of his working years with Hertz/Penske, designing and operating the computer systems that kept track of the location and maintenance of their nationwide fleet of trucks. He resided for years in Atlanta,, where he enjoyed many hours partially renovating three old Victorian houses inside and out to an amazing elegance; he tore out dilapidated plaster walls; he plumbed and wired; he cut fancy moldings; he hung fine hand-screened wallpaper in rich, vivid colors, and restored beveled-glass windows. He filled his final Atlanta home with bright and beautiful antiques, Tiffany shades, and Oriental rugs. His homes were important stops in Atlanta's annual Inman Park Festival. When he retired, Jim lived for awhile in a lovely surfside home in Melbourne Beach, FL, then moved to his present home in Clermont, where he could view Lake Louisa through massive, gnarly trees draped with Spanish moss. He greatly enjoyed yearly visits from his son and grandchildren, who loved swimming in Grandpa Jim's pool and going with him to enjoy the many child-friendly attractions of the Orlando area. He is survived by his son, Andrew Lewis Pond, and his grandchildren Justin Lewis Pond (14) and Mirabel Magnolia Pond (12), all of Bolton, Vermont. He is also survived by his sister Judith Pond, of Norwich, Vermont, and several cousins and their families.
