James Andrew Mellon March 16, 1960 - September 8, 2025
James Andrew Mellon, affectionately known as "Jim," passed away on September 8, 2025, at the age of 65, after facing health complications. Born near Toledo, Ohio, on March 16, 1960, a date he cherished for its closeness to St. Patrick's Day, Jim was the beloved son of Jim and Carol Mellon. He grew up in Detroit, Michigan, alongside his sisters, Peggy and Patti.
Jim attended Catholic Central in Detroit, where he proudly played on the football team and was a member of the state championship wrestling team. He went on to study at the University of Notre Dame, serving as an equipment manager for the football team, and later earned his MBA from the University of Detroit Mercy. Jim then dedicated nearly 20 years to a career at General Motors.
In 2001, Jim moved to Orlando, Florida, to be closer to his family. He was a strong advocate for Catholic education and team athletics. Saturdays during college football season were his favorites, and he was a devoted Notre Dame fan, actively participating in the Notre Dame Club of Orlando. Jim's enthusiasm for sports extended to his family. He never missed a chance to cheer on his nieces and nephews, lovingly calling them his "champs," at their Bishop Moore volleyball, golf, track, lacrosse, and football games.
Family was everything to Jim. He is survived by his sisters, Peggy (Carlos) Fernandez and Patti (Eric) Scott; his brother-in-law, Lucien (Lynn) Johnson; his cherished nieces and nephews: Lucien (Caroline) Johnson, Caroline Fernandez, Erin (Boyce) Taylor, and Griffin Johnson; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and lifelong friends.
Jim will be remembered for his support, loyalty, thoughtful generosity, and his famously festive holiday attire. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Details for a memorial service will be shared at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bishop Moore Catholic High School Guardian Angel Endowment Fund in memory of Jim Mellon.
