IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James Millar
Leighton
May 19, 1933 – June 29, 2024
James Millar Leighton, known affectionately as Jim, passed away on June 29, 2024 at the age of 91 in Clermont, Florida. Born on May 19, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan, Jim spent his full and rich life truly living and as a cherished member of his community. He enjoyed playing golf, meeting for breakfast with friends, had a sweet tooth, was an avid traveler who has visited places all over the world, loved cruises, and found joy in having company over to share some excellently grilled steaks. He was not a man of many words, but he knew how to be a good friend, give people grace, honor his word, enjoy life, and was a good listener.
Jim is survived by his wife, Charlotte, and many loving step children and grandchildren, as well as Dan (his nephew) and Mary (his neice). He was predeceased by his parents, James and Dorothy Leighton, his two sisters: Marilyn and Cathy Leighton, and his first wife, Theresa (Teri).
As a youth in thriving Detroit, known as the Motor City, Jim was accepted into a technical engineering program through General Motors that gave him a robust education and skills to work within GM. He worked his way up through the company and earned an impressive career within GM that he eventually retired from. Jim had a keen mind and an excellence for problem solving and fixing things.
Jim joined the Navy in 1951, spending 4 years as a helmsman during the Korean conflict. He made lasting friendships among his shipmates that held strong through the passing years.
He was a longstanding member of the Living Hope Church where he participated actively. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. The community has lost a beloved figure, and his memory will continue to inspire those who had the pleasure of knowing him. When asked if he had any advice for others from his 91 years life, he said, "be kind to others, because the people I remember the most are those who were kind to me."
Jim was a generous man. He would ask that you make a donation to the charity of your choice rather than sending flowers.
