Obituary

In Loving Memory of James Avillian Ferguson

With heavy hearts and deepest sympathy, we announce the passing of James Avillian Ferguson, a beloved father, cherished grandfather, brother, nephew, distinguished veteran, and accomplished professional. Born on July 4, 1939, in Rock Hill, SC, to Virginia Biggers Johnson and Wilbert Holmes Ferguson, Sr. James peacefully entered into eternal rest on Monday, January 27, 2025, at the age of 85.

James was a proud graduate of West Charlotte High School (Class of '57), where he was an academically gifted student as a member of the National Honor Society. James answered the call of duty at just 18 years old, serving his country with honor in the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Army, 101st Airborne Division. A Vietnam War veteran, his service took him around the world—to Germany, France, and Italy—expanding his worldview, broadening his horizons and instilling in him the values of discipline, resilience, and leadership. Beyond his service, James embraced life with passion. A decorated league bowler and an avid traveler, James found joy exploring the world through travel, especially the Caribbean where he felt most at peace.

James furthered his education at Princeton University, a testament to his unwavering pursuit of knowledge and excellence. His professional journey began in computer science at Eastman Kodak in Rochester, NY, leading to a distinguished 25-year career with Mobil Oil Company, where he made a lasting impact before retiring in 1996. Retirement, however, was merely a transition to another endeavor—serving as a Consultant for KPMG in the U.S., China, and Japan, where he continued to share his wisdom and expertise, leaving a meaningful legacy in multiple industries.

Following his military service, James married Cleo in Washington, D.C. Their union was blessed with three beautiful devoted daughters—Monique Ferguson Stewart (Todd) of Laurel, MD, Lisa Ferguson Purnell (Daniel) of Raleigh, NC, and Marissa Ferguson-Samreth (Sovann) of Wake Forest, NC.

James is preceded in passing by his parents, Virginia Biggers Johnson and Wilbert Holmes Ferguson, Sr.(Bertha/Nana), as well as his siblings, William Johnson, Joyce Livingston, Michael Johnson, and Audrey Jeanette Ware.

His legacy lives on in those who cherish his memory, including his daughters (Monique, Lisa, Marissa, and Alexandra), his beloved siblings, Wilbert Ferguson (Junior), Keith Johnson, Jessie Beckett, Hazel Johnson, and Sarah Johnson-Patton, his Aunt Carrie Bell Ferguson Gill(Uncle Bill), and his former wife, Cleo Ferguson.

James was also a proud grandfather to his seven cherished grandchildren: Alexa Stewart, Brendon Stewart and Christian Stewart of Laurel, MD; Lauryn Purnell and Dylan Purnell of Raleigh, NC; Briana Samreth and Lance Samreth of Wake Forest, NC.

He will also be missed by a host of extended family, dear friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

James' life was one of service, love, and wisdom. His laughter, strength, and unwavering guidance will be dearly missed but never forgotten. Though we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the remarkable man he was, holding onto the comfort that he is now at peace in the presence of the Lord. Rest well, dear James/daddy/grandfather. Your journey here is complete, but your love and legacy will live on forever in our hearts.
