Obituary

Helen Jane Sherwood, age 90, of Clermont, left this world quietly with her husband and daughters present on February 19, 2021.

Helen was a licensed practical nurse completing her training in 1964.  Married to a USAF officer, she frequently moved to different stateside or overseas assignments.  However, what did not change was her devotion to nursing as she continuously volunteered at the base hospital family clinic wherever stationed.  Volunteering at the American medical center at Royal Air Force Bentwater, England, she received a letter of appreciation from the hospital commander for her over 1100 hours of service.  While at Eglin AFB Florida, the Federal Immigration Service requested base medical help at a "Camp Liberty Compound".  Helen immediately joined to help.  When Fidel Castro suddenly allowed Cuban families to leave Cuba, this secure compound was quickly built.  The compound was established to care for and house the hundreds of Cuban families while their custom clearance was completed to enter this country.

During her stay at Scott AFB, Illinois, she was a volunteer at the base medical facility during the weekdays and several nights a week was a volunteer at the USO center in the nearby St. Louis Missouri Lambert International Airport.  The airport was a major staging area for military families departing to or returning from their overseas assignment.  The USO center offered a comforting place to rest, snacks and friendly assistance.

Helen's fondest reminiscence occurred during her husband's retirement ceremony.  She received a letter of appreciation sign by his 23 AF Commander and endorsed by the United States Air Force Chief of Staff recognizing her unselfish, faithful and devoted service and unfailing support and understanding to help make it possible for her husband's lasting contribution to the nation.

As her husband completed his service to the nation, Helen desired to honor her service to her beloved religious beliefs.  Her life has always been devoted to Spiritualism.  She was raised by her grandmother, who was a Spiritualist Minister and grew up in the religion.  Her loving heart and kind nature always drew people to her as she loved to share philosophy of honoring others by following the Golden Rule.  Helen was a beautiful teacher, medium and healer, and inspired many people who were trying to find their way in life.  She was a member of the Church of Spiritual Awakening and was ordained on February 2, 2008.  As an Ordained Minister, Reverend Helen continued her work of teaching and sharing her wisdom with others.

Helen will be remembered with devoted love by her husband Paul, her daughters Kathy, Karen, Carol, Connie, son-in-laws Gene, Michael, nine grand-children, twelve great grand-children, one great-great grand child and many kind and understanding friends.

A celebration of Helen's life will be planned at a future date.
