Obituary

Hazel Morrison Marshall was born March 10, 1930 in Detroit, MI. and passed on Sept. 1, 2022 in Eustis, Fla.  She was born in Detroit because her father moved the family there to get work at a stove factory at the beginning of the Great Depression.  A child of the depression, Hazel's mindset would be affected by it her entire lifetime.   The family moved to Clermont within a couple of years where her parents made ends meet through the local fruit industry that her father, Henry worked in while her mother Vonceil worked retail sales at a "sundry's store" or "five and dime"  in downtown Clermont.

Growing up Hazel made it her priority to protect her mother and sister Jackie from the harsh side effects of the depression,  and she developed a tough personality,  quick wit, and dry humor that would be an important part of who she was.  Rising to the challenges of her youth Hazel graduated at the top of her class at Clermont High School - Class of 48' and won entry to Florida State University where she studied English with the intention of becoming a journalist.  Hazel worked not one, not two, but three part time jobs to stay in Tallahassee and get her Bachelor's degree at Florida State.  She also acted as the Assistant Editor to the Florida State Flambeau (FSU's school newspaper) her Senior year.  After graduating she moved to Georgia where she worked at the Tifton Gazette in Tifton, GA.  Immediately bored by the storylines of record size pigs and unusually strong cotton prices, Hazel decided to move back to Clermont after a year.

Upon Returning to Clermont, Hazel Morrison met an old friend from High School, Charlie Marshall and the two reestablished their friendship.  The friendship evolved into a relationship and then marriage.  Hazel and Charlie were married Feb. 1, 1953 and proceeded to have 4 children, Deane (Marie) Marshall, Mary Anne (Chunk) Meeker, Melanie (Mark) Waite, and Chuck (Janet) Marshall.  Charlie was a pharmacist and opened Marshall's Pharmacy in downtown Clermont with Hazel managing the business side.  The store served the community for 39 years from 1958 to 1997 and came to be the couple's most important and significant work.

Intelligent & ambitious as a young Florida State journalism graduate- Hazel had had her sights on fixing the world,  but as is true for most young idealists this changed as the reality of life became clear, and her world evolved into one of love and devotion to her family.  With 8 grandchildren she doted on all 8 with equal adoration and they were truly the joy of her life.   She will always be remembered by those who knew her as a loving, intelligent,  opinionated, loyal  and thoughtful woman with an endearing ability to get to know people with genuine questions to find out "who they are" as she would say.  So in a way, she did become a journalist.   Throughout her life this natural inquisitiveness towards anyone she met made her a delight to get to know and their stories WERE told- to her interested ears with nods of understanding,  encouraging comments and easy laughter.   She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Hazel is survived by her four children, eight grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
