Obituary

Spouses are rarely prepared to write an obituary for the one that has been the earthly center of their lives for much of their own life and so I struggle.

My husband was born in Mangalore, South India in 1946; he also died there. He was 72 years old when he passed from death unto life, 19 June 2019. Knowing Harry, you knew that his 2nd birth at the age of 19 was more important than his first. This second birth was the very one Jesus explained to Nicodemus in John, chapter 3, where our very own Savior said that "ye must be born again." (That is the second birth.)  Harry spent the first part of his life in India. He was owner, publisher and regular contributing writer to a well-known Konkani newspaper in Mangalore, The Fortnightly. During his years in India he owned a print shop called Santa Cruz Press. Harry was active in local politics and theater. He wrote a good number of folk songs that are known throughout the city. His pen name was Harryboy. "Harryboy" became an affectionate name and followed him the rest of his days.

As with most people that emigrate to America, he had dreams of improving an already good life. He wanted to live what he perceived to be the American dream. He loved America and believed that the Biblical culture was why America was great. Harry knew the Lord when he came to America in October of 1977. During his college years, a woman met him at a bus stand in Mangalore and challenged him.  Do you know who the Lord is or do you have Him? Being a writer, Harry immediately picked up on what was almost word play. At that moment he realized that knowing who Jesus was is not enough. Harry experienced his second birth on a roadside in the city of his first birth.

Harry had an incredible work ethic. He had his first job in the United States the first week he arrived here and never stopped working and contributing to his new country. Printer, dishwasher, waiter, maitre de, business owner and restaurant manager and pastor.

1987 marked two major events in his life. He became a citizen of the United States that summer and married me in the fall. We made our first trip to India together that winter. Soon I understood that he wanted to serve God for the rest of his life and so he did. His leading and faithfulness affected many lives including my own. His studies led him to believe that the place he could learn the Bible best were Baptist churches, but his heart was the Bible foremost. Harry was born into a large and devout Roman Catholic family and while he changed his primary place of worship because of His beliefs, he never lost his love for his family. It was his faith that kept his deep family love strong throughout his life.

Family was always important to my husband, from the ones he loved as a child, to the ones in the family of God. Lois, India and I had the biggest part of his life, until we were forced to share him with 6 grandchildren. He loved those babies.

I will never forget the moment as his breathing stopped and he was gone. India and I were at his bedside and quite naturally we both were shaken as the inevitable became reality, but India began shaking with tears. As I moved to comfort her, this is what she said, "I can just imagine what Daddy must be seeing right now."

Harry is survived by his wife, Cindyann Croushore Rasquinha, daughter Lois Severine and her husband, Joshua Ormsby and their two boys, Malachi and Joash, often referred to as "little Harry." India Mae was our youngest and she is married to Zachary Werner. They have 4 children, Sakshi, Paisley, Thaddeus and Sophie. He was "Cha cha"  to the grands.

Harry was the 6th child of Sebastian and Severine Rasquinha,  1 of 10 children.  Predeceased by Amy D'Souza and a baby brother that died soon after birth. Seven of the Rasquinha children remain. Isaac, Celine D'Silva, Molly Cornelio, Nazarene (Gracey) Rasquinha, Ladislaus, Vida Miranda and Avil.
