Obituary

Hamer Eugene Lucas (Gene) 1916-2014 Gene Lucas was born in 1916 in Blanchester, Ohio to Selma Strawn and Hamer C. Lucas. He moved with his brother Strawn and parents to Cincinnati, Ohio where he graduated high school. Gene served in the navy in WWII aboard the destroyer McNair as a quartermaster first class. He later worked as a merchant marine on the Great Lakes where he met his wife, Marion Caughell, the Captain's daughter. They moved to Clermont, Florida in 1949 and built a home on Pitt Street. Gene was employed by the U.S. Postal Service, coached Little League baseball teams (The Indians, The Orioles, The Elks) and was an avid gardener. He shared his vegetable bounty with family and friends. Gene was a lifelong Cincinnati Reds fan. Gene was predeceased by his brother, Strawn Lucas of Clermont and Cincinnati, his wife, Marion Caughell Lucas. He is survived by his children Patty Lucas Green of Astatula, Debbie Lucas Wharton of Tallahassee, Karen Lucas Zavon (Bruce) of Bonaire, Dutch Antilles and St. Augustine, and Jon Lucas of Minneola. He has 5 grandchildren: Kelly Woelfel (Kurt), Dana Armstong, Jarrod Perrin (Kathy), Nathan Wharton and Robin Wharton and 7 great-grandchildren. The family will hold a private service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to South Lake Little League, P.O Box 120986, Clermont Florida 34712 or Cornerstone Hospice. A special thanks goes out to the staff of Superior Residence of Clermont.
