Grace E. Sayers, 81, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 8, 2014, after a long illness. She was born in Virginia and also lived in South Carolina and Louisiana. She had been a resident of Deland since 1964 where she and her former husband, Lee Sayers, raised four children. In her later years she cared for her mother, Eleanor Mack, who lived to be 101 years old.
Grace had a life-long interest in music and the arts. She was a singer, guitar player, and was active in community theatre. She sang for many years in the choir at Trinity Methodist Church in DeLand and often hosted folk and bluegrass sessions at her home. Grace and Lee performed in community theater at Shoestring Theatre, and she also supported productions as stage manager and sound/light technician. She loved to entertain and was the host of many popular cast parties. Later she worked in the business operations of the Cultural Arts Center in DeLand. Many friendships were formed from her involvement in the theater and the arts.
Grace was a homemaker but throughout her life worked in other occupations. She was an office support staff member for her former husband's architectural firm, Spartan Electronics, the Cultural Arts Center, and an independent living community, and also was a server at the historic Holiday House restaurant.
She is survived by her 4 children, John and wife Pati Sayers, Clermont, FL; Cathy and husband Vic Godlewski, Orlando,FL; Steven and wife Margaret Sayers, Elkins Park, PA; and David Sayers, Austin, Texas and ten Grandchildren: Janis, Michael, Laura, Kevin, Victor, Sarah, Ryan, Douglas, David, and Kenan.
A Celebration of Grace's life will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, September 20, 2014 at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Deland, FL.
