Gerald H. "Jerry" Barr of Clermont, FL and formerly of Romeo, MI, died peacefully on October 30th, 2024. Jerry was born on September 14th, 1939, to Emma (nee Damaschke) and George Barr in Port Huron, Michigan. After graduating from Port Huron High School, he went on to attend Ohio Northern University on baseball and basketball scholarships. He was drafted by the Washington Senators baseball organization and also spent time with the Detroit Tigers organization in spring training before a shoulder injury ended his MLB hopes. He returned to Michigan with his wife Nancy Bell (Stubbs) Barr and accepted a teaching position in the Port Huron schools. In addition, he also spent time teaching in Marlette, MI and, finally, almost 30 years as a teacher, coach and athletic director in Romeo, Michigan. Jerry earned his master's degree from the University of Michigan.
While in Romeo, Coach Barr lead many different teams for the Bulldogs. At some point he coached JV football, tennis, boys' golf, varsity softball and varsity boys' basketball. He also sponsored a girls travel softball team to assist in the development of the softball program in the district. Coach Barr's teams won several league, district and regional championships and Jerry was elected to the Michigan High School Coaches Hall of Fame, the Port Huron Sports Hall of Fame and the Macomb County Coaches Hall of Fame.
In addition to his many coaching and teaching responsibilities, Coach Barr was also a stringer for AP covering the Detroit Tigers. This included their World Series championship in 1984 where he was one of many reporters who spent the night locked in the old Tiger stadium due to the many exuberant celebrations throughout the city. The AP role also gave him the opportunity to work the sidelines during the first Super Bowl held at the Pontiac Silverdome in January of 1982.
After retiring from the Romeo Schools, Coach Barr and his wife moved to Orlando Florida where he worked for 12 years for the golf resorts at the Walt Disney World company. He retired from Disney and enjoyed spending time playing golf and visiting with his family and friends on their many visits.
