George William "Bill" Bedingfield, 75, of Clermont, FL passed away Saturday, February 11, 2017. Bill was born on September 20, 1941 in Dublin, GA, son of Doyle Eldridge and Nancy E. "Bettye" Bedingfield. He was a Junior College All-American (Honorable Mention at the Georgia Military Institute) basketball player. Bill joined the U.S. Army and served for 2 years, then attended the University of Georgia, graduating in 1967. After graduation he taught and coached at Fernandina Beach High School for four years.
Bill began his career with the State of Florida in 1971 when he went to work for the Division of Youth Services. In 1979 Bill was named Superintendent of Lancaster Correctional Institution when the facility was transferred to the Department of Corrections. After working at many facilities for the Department of Corrections, Bill fully retired from the State of Florida in 2005.
Bill was a Past President of the Florida Council on Crime and Delinquency, a member of Southern States Correctional Association, Florida Peace Officers Association and the American Correctional Association.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Cheryl; sons, Chip, Miles and Brian; brother, Doyle Eldridge Bedingfield, Jr. and 9 grandchildren.
