Gene Barbour
Haskell E. Barbour, Jr.
1940-2024
Gene peacefully passed on August 11, 2024, after a lengthy illness. Pinky, his wife of 29 years and Bella, his beloved Yorkie Poo, were at his side.
He was born in West Virginia to Haskell and Beulah Barbour, who preceded him in death, as well as his sister, Julia.
He was active in sports in his early years, especially in Little League baseball and football.
The family moved to Clearwater, Florida during his junior year in High School. He continued to excel in Baseball and Football and ultimately received a contract offer from the St. Louis Cardinals at age 18. At that time, parental consent was required, and his Father "chose" for him to instead accept the Football and Baseball Scholarship to the University of Louisiana and became a Ragin Cajun! So upon graduation from Clearwater High School in 1959, he was off to college in Lafayette, LA. (He was elected to the Hall of Fame at Clearwater High School)
He was proud to serve his country as a member of the United States Air Force from 1963 until 1967 as an Air Policeman, stationed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany.
His career life included being a Broker/owner of Barbour Real Estate in Clearwater and Inverness, FL, the Parks and Recreation Director of Citrus County, and a 20 year Citrus County Schools Administrator, retiring in 2007.
Gene was very active in service to the community:
Little League Baseball President, Umpire coordinator, Umpire
City Softball League Umpire
Girls Softball Coach, Citrus High School
Director YMCA Youth Football
