Gary Thomas Burk, 79, of Clermont, passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

Gary was born in Troy, New York, to the late James Burk and Doris Burnham.He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Doris Jensen-Burk; his daughters, Deanna Carlton (Darren) of Casselberry, Florida, and Dianna Kennedy of Troy, New York; and his cherished grandchildren, Emily Kennedy-Taber (Grayson) of Nashville, Tennessee, and Dylan Carlton of Casselberry, Florida.

Gary was predeceased by his late brother, Robert Burk. Survived by his sister Carol Grogan, widow of the late Bernard Grogan of Lyon Mountain, New York; his nephews, Michael Grogan (John Harrington) and Barry Grogan of Lyon Mountain, New York. He is also survived by his nieces, Shelia Shover (Jason) and daughters of Speigletown, New York, and Patricia Barrett (Joseph) and sons of Troy, New York.

Following his graduation from Mechanicville High School in 1967, Gary proudly enlisted in the United States Navy. During his first six years of service, he attained the rank of Hull Technician Third Class and served during the Vietnam era. His naval assignments took him throughout the Mediterranean, where he visited ports in Italy, Greece, Spain, and numerous other countries. 

In 1979, Gary reenlisted in the Navy and served an additional six years with the Navy Seabees. He received his second Honorable Discharge in 1985, concluding a distinguished military career marked by dedication, integrity, and faithful service to his country.

Following his military service, Gary worked for many years as a machinist for the Watervliet Arsenal in Watervliet, New York, where he contributed to the manufacturing of cannon barrels for the Department of Defense. After relocating to Florida in 1995, he joined the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at Orlando International Airport in Orlando, FL. Later, he worked in weekend security at the Manheim Auto Auction in Orlando, FL for approximately ten years before fully retiring.

Gary's love of boats and life on the water began in his childhood. His parents owned and operated a marina on the Hudson River in Mechanicville, New York. He enjoyed spending time aboard their 21-foot Trojan cabin cruiser. Working alongside his father, Gary learned the art of boat repair and restoration, a passion he carried throughout his life. He spent many years restoring wooden antique boats, a hobby that brought him great satisfaction and pride.

Gary was also an avid train enthusiast. His favorite scales included Lionel, HO, O-27, and G gauge. He designed and built custom train layouts for himself and fellow hobbyists and created an elaborate train village made entirely from LEGO bricks for his grandchildren to enjoy, combining his creativity with his love for family.

Family time was important to him; he and his family spent countless summers camping in the Adirondack Mountains, particularly at Fish Creek Pond Campground on Saranac Lake, New York. He was the fun-loving father who took everyone boating, waterskiing, and tubing, creating memories that will be treasured for generations. Even after moving to Florida, the family continued the tradition of returning to upstate New York each summer to camp together.

Gary was a devoted member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Troy, New York, and later became part of the church family at Woodlands Lutheran Church in Montverde, Florida.

Throughout his life, Gary made many friends and could strike up a conversation with anyone, especially if it was about boats, trains or his Navy adventures. Known for his fun spirit, he was always willing to help those in need. His warm heart, quick wit, and wonderful sense of humor brought joy and laughter to family and friends alike. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, December 4, 2026, 2pm, at Florida National Cemetery.
