Obituary

Elizabeth Todd McCown (Betsy), age 76, of Clermont, Florida, gained her angel wings on January 19, 2024, at the Mike Conley Hospice House, Clermont, Florida. She was born on March 27, 1947, the second child of John Robert and Hilda McCown of Clermont, Florida.

Betsy was a 1965 graduate of Clermont High School. She attended Brevard Junior College in Brevard, NC and received her Associate of Arts degree in 1967.  She received her B. A. degree from the University of Central Florida (then known as Florida Technological University) in 1980.

One of Betsy's proudest moments was working at Walt Disney World Guest Services the day that WDW Orlando opened on October 1, 1971.  She was the first Guest Services Representative to receive the award for outstanding customer relations.  She was a certified lifeguard for one of the Walt Disney World hotel resorts and enjoyed her time as a Walt Disney World employee.  Betsy held other work positions as a receptionist for Greenlee, Kurras, Rice, and Brown in Clermont, and enjoyed working as a Crossing Guard for the City of Minneola.  She would often share how much she loved that job and the joy of interacting with the children walking to Minneola Elementary School and volunteered in the lower elementary classrooms.

In Betsy's early years before her health declined, Betsy enjoyed swimming in the lakes of Clermont.  She particularly enjoyed traveling both nationally and internationally with her family. Many summers were spent with her family in Highlands, NC and she would share stories about the wonderful people she met while up in the mountains, and of course, her irresistible love of chocolate and the homemade fudge there!

As her health declined, Betsy became an avid reader of nonfiction literature.  Her brother, Bob, would interface with her each week and give her suggestions of books he had read that she might be interested in checking out at the Minneola Public Library.

Betsy valued her close friendships.  Her generosity, support, love, and graciousness were always demonstrated whether they be acts of kindness, active listening, empathizing, and most of all her verbal and nonverbal gestures of love.

She is predeceased by her father, John R. McCown and mother, Hilda R. McCown; She is survived by her brother, John R. McCown, Jr. and close friends.
