Obituary

On August 21, 2016 Doug Ballantyne died peacefully at home in Clermont Florida.  Mr. Ballantyne was born in Chicago Illinois June 1 1933 to Grace Bowles and Frank Ballantyne. He and his parents later moved to Waterbury Connecticut where he and his younger brothers Bruce and Richard grew up.

Doug graduated from Duke University in 1956 with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was also a graduate of the NROTC program at Duke and joined the Navy as an Ensign upon graduation. He also studied at Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute where he received a MS degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1963.

He married Marilyn Barnum of Waterbury Connecticut on December 31, 1955. Together they have three daughters: Elizabeth Crocker, Laura Doucette and Katherine Sheppard who survive their father.

After his service in the Navy Doug joined Pratt and Whitney in Hartford Connecticut. As an engineer he developed new jet aircraft engine designs. He briefly worked at Continental Aircraft in Detroit Michigan before he joined the General Electric Engines Division in Lynn Massachusetts where he continued developing improved engine designs. He retired from GE in 1998.

While a resident of Ipswich Massachusetts he and Marilyn purchase a home in King's Ridge, Claremont Florida. He enjoyed playing Bridge, Poker and Golf including the luck to have several "holes in one".

In addition to his wife and three daughters Doug is also survived by three grandsons: Sid, Clyde and Coty Sheppard.
