Dorothy McKay Sellers
09-17-1935 to 08-20-2015
Dorothy was born in Headland, AL to the late William Brian McKay, Sr. and
Bell Buckner McKay. She was the eldest granddaughter of the late Emmett Winston McKay and Zipporah Wiggins McKay also of Headland.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her Parents, Grandparents, her loving husband
Sonny, William "Brother" McKay, and nephew Joseph Wilder.
Dorothy attended George Peabody College for Teachers, what is now known as Vanderbilt University, where she received her teaching certificate. She taught for several years in the Wiregrass area.
Dorothy married the love of her life, F.B. "Sonny" Sellers on April 26, 1957.
She continued teaching until they began their family. First Susan, then Bibb and then a work promotion for Sonny, which brought the family to Orlando, FL in 1963, where later Kathy was born. Her children were truly her pride and joy.
Dorothy's love of children, ALL children lead her back to work at Mollie E Ray Elementary in Pine Hills in 1975, where she changed the lives of hundreds of children until 1996 upon her retirement. Her mission was to reach each child, to teach them to read and more importantly to believe in themselves.
Dorothy loved life, she was a strong and independent woman. She had many hobbies, she enjoyed gardening, cooking, bird watching and was quite an artist. As her sight slipped away, she leaned towards auditory entertainment- listening to birds, and music.
She loved opera, classical, big band jazz music along with traditional and contemporary hymns.
She enjoyed talk radio and participating in philosophical and lively debates with all who dared.
She is survived by her sister, Sara McKay Wilder and her family Jeffery, Andrew, and Becky Alkhatib.
Her children: Susan Sellers Johnson and her husband Chris, Franklin "Bibb" Sellers, Jr., Kathy Dixon and her husband Kevin; and her greatest legacy she leaves behind, her grandchildren:
Christopher and wife Lynn, Benny, Mikey and wife Iyat, Zachary and her Great Granddaughters Emily and Olivia.
Her four legged babies who touched her heart greatly, Shugah, Harley, Katie, Jenny, Spunky, Tippy and Lily and Miss Kitty.
You will be loved always, in our hearts forever and missed much until we meet again Momma Dot, we love you!
