Obituary

Doris June Knupp, born on June 16, 1928, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2025, at the Mike Conley Hospice House in Clermont, Florida.
Doris was born in Percy, Iowa but her family moved to the town of Glenwood in northeast Missouri when she was a young child.  She had many fond memories of growing up in Glenwood with her six siblings (two brothers and four sisters). Throughout her life, Doris enjoyed sharing stories about her family and friends in Missouri.  [She remained close to her siblings and for many years organized annual get-togethers where they could enjoy each other's company.]

Doris graduated from Lancaster High School in 1946 and shortly thereafter was hired as the teacher in a nearby rural one-room schoolhouse.  As it happened, Joe Knupp had returned to the area a few months earlier, after serving in WWII, and was living with his family on their nearby farm.  Doris and Joe met when he purchased her "pie supper" at a school event, and the rest is history.  They were married in 1948 and spent the next 67 years together.

Doris and Joe had big aspirations and moved to the Chicago area in 1951.  She worked as a legal secretary for Baxter Laboratories, which she later described as her "best job #1."  After subsequently having her children, Doris spent several years as a homemaker before returning to the workforce part-time in 1970 as a secretary. She went on to work as a travel agent, followed by several years working for Princess Cruise Lines, which was "best job #2," probably because it enabled Doris & Joe to enjoy the perks of travelling the world and cruising to many fascinating locations.  When Princess Cruises relocated their offices to California, Doris chose to stay in the Chicago area and spent the last years of her career as an office manager for a financial planner.

Doris retired in 1990 to spend time traveling with Joe and enjoying life.  They were also active in organizing get-togethers for his WWII reunion groups, where she met many new friends.  But her greatest joy in retirement was spending time with her grandsons Jamie and Kyle, who were the light of her life.  She loved cooking for them, playing their games, attending baseball games and school activities, caring for them when their parents were away; generally reveling in the life of a grandmother.

After 70 years of living in the Chicago area, Doris accompanied her son Mat and daughter-in-law Janet in a move to Clermont, Florida in 2021.  She resided in her own apartment and enjoyed the warm weather and palm trees, taking boat rides and exploring local attractions with Janet.

Doris is survived by her daughter Patricia Coale (Streett), son Mathew Knupp, grandsons James Knupp and Kyle Knupp, numerous nieces and nephews, grand-dogs Mushu, Iris and Wendyll, and great-grand cat Chips Ahoy.   She was pre-deceased by her husband of 67 years, Joseph Knupp, daughter-in-law Janet Knupp, and six siblings and their spouses: Kenneth Simbro (Emma), Marval Yearns (Lloyd), Russell Simbro (Billye), Pauline Howard (Melvin), Charlotte Gruwell (Don) and Jaunita Hill (Wayne).

Interment will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois at a future date to be determined.  In the interim, family and friends are invited to share their memories and photos of Doris at the link below.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts to one of Doris' favorite charities, Canine Companions (service dog organization) at www.canine.org
