Obituary

Dolores ("Lolo") Caraballo was born on 12/28/1930, in Yauco, Puerto Rico, the son of Manuel Caraballo and Filomena Negrón.  He was the 7th of 10 children; he was the last surviving sibling.

He left Puerto Rico in 1951 looking for a better life on the mainland.  He found work picking asparagus during harvest time in New Jersey.  While there, he heard a radio announcement that the steel mills in northwest Indiana were hiring, which were booming during that era.  He and some friends traveled to East Chicago, Indiana and were immediately hired as laborers at the Inland Steel Company.

Lolo was an avid baseball fan; he followed all the nearby Chicago sports teams, the Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago White Sox.  But his all-time favorite baseball team was the New York Yankees.

He had been working in the states for 10 years when in early 1961, while eating at a local restaurant in East Chicago, he was smitten with a waitress named Luz María Santiago.  They were married in September of that year. They had a son, Daniel, followed by a daughter, Diana.  After moving to Gary, Indiana, they had a third child, a son, Noel.

In 1981, the family planted roots in Hammond, Indiana.

Lolo and Luz were blessed with 5 grandchildren --

From son Daniel and wife Monica:  Daniel Jacob Caraballo (28), Monica Alexis Caraballo (26)

From daughter Diana and husband Gerardo:  Emily Marie Quiñones (20)

From son Noel and Sherry:  Brittany Marie Caraballo (31), Anthony Alexander Caraballo (28), and 2 great-grandchildren, Damian Caraballo (6), Odin Tomás Caraballo (2).

Lolo retired from working at Inland Steel Company as a tractor crane operator after 41+ years in early 1993.

Before, and especially more often during his retirement years, Lolo and Luz María were dedicated to corporal works of mercy when friends were ill or injured, coming to their homes, always helping and bringing food to them, or visiting their friends or acquaintances when they were in the hospital or in nursing homes.  He had a natural ability to befriend people, drawing even shy people to him by including them in conversations and making them feel welcomed, warm, and comfortable.

Lolo was a handyman, always working on projects around the house and caring for his lawn and garden.

Lolo and Luz also enjoyed some travel, making frequent trips to Puerto Rico and New York to visit relatives, and vacation travel to Florida, Nevada, and Hawaii.

Lolo and Luz María, after his health began to decline, moved to Clermont, Florida earlier this year to live with their daughter, Diana Caraballo de Quiñones.

At the age of 90, Dolores ("Lolo") Caraballo crossed the bridge to eternal life on 08/16/2021.
