Obituary

Desmond Stennett Orville Robinson was born on April 4, 1943 to the late Valda and Stanford Robinson. He was the 2nd born of 9 children, and the eldest son. Desmond was a spry, vibrant child and adopted the nickname "Sten" while growing up in the Parish of St Catherine, Jamaica W.I. After working several jobs in Jamaica, he migrated to the United States in December 1967. Desmond lived in Brooklyn, NY, where he met and fell in love with Yvonne Hurde. They were happily married on April 19, 1969. He enjoyed a life in retail where he was an assistant manager at Triangle Sporting-Goods in Flatbush, Brooklyn, where he outfitted friends and family all the time. Desmond and Yvonne have two children, Natasha and Desmond Jr., who were both born in Brooklyn, NY. At this time in Desmond's life, he loved caring for and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed a good drink while hanging out with friends and playing cricket or dominos. In 1978, his family moved to Hempstead, Long Island after the purchase of their first home. Sten, as he was most often called by family and friends, was known for his annual summer barbecues, where he was the life of the party and a mean griller. These were the events in which friends and family had the best time. Sten was a very generous man who was always willing to help out in your time of need. He took the initiative of becoming a sponsor for his parents and many of his brothers and sisters in Jamaica. He was a was a hard working family man with a strong wit, who was very instrumental in helping his family migrate from Jamaica to the United States. In 1984, his family moved to New Jersey where he worked as a store manager for Rite Aid Pharmacy. During this time he was a rock solid foundation for his family. He could always be counted on for support, guidance and strength when the family needed it. He helped cultivate his two children and was very influential in both of them attending college, earning Bachelor Degrees, and raising families of their own. Sten later became a grandfather to Shani and Amare whom he loved and adored, and he was affectionately called "Pop Pop" by the grand kids. Sten was a reserved man, who was content with kicking back, watching TV, and having a cold Heineken after a hard day of work. He relished watching Western & Classic movies, Fox news and rooting for his favorite NY Sports teams.  After many years of working at Rite Aid, he retired at the age of 68 and moved to Florida in January, 2012 with his wife of 44 years, Yvonne. Soon thereafter, he was diagnosed with brain cancer. Sten lost his battle on May 1 2013.  Sten is survived by his wife Yvonne; his children Natasha & Desmond Jr. and their spouses Robert & Aliya.; his grandkids Shani and Amare; his eight siblings, Majorie, Binsworth, Stephney, Congrieve, Dawn, Ricky, Valerie and San; his sisters-in-law Sadie, Sheila, & Merle; his brothers-in-laws; Jefferson, Yohan, John, & Norman; and his many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  Sten will most surely be missed by everyone who knew him. He was taken from us way too soon.
