Debbie Hughes Wood passed away at home on January 22nd, after a long battle with cancer.
She was born Debbie Lynn Hughes on February 11, 1955, in Shelby, North Carolina. Hearing impaired
since birth, Debbie was determined to overcome her obstacles and landed a job at Duke Energy Corp as a nuclear Quality Control Inspector, where she worked for 20 years. She moved to Clermont, Florida in 1999 where she married Bryan Wood. Most recently, she worked for Orlando Health South Lake Hospital in the Health Information Management Dept until her retirement in 2020.
Despite her hearing loss, Debbie loved music and even played the glockenspiel in her high school band!
Her favorite musical group was always the Beatles.She was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church.
Debbie was a loving mother to her son Eric and his wife Justean, and a doting grandmother to their
daughter Ripley. She was preceded in death by her beloved sister Denise, and is survived by her loving husband Bryan.
Her mother Mary Katherine Hughes still lives in Shelby.
A Memorial Ceremony will be held on Friday, February 11th, 11:00 am, at Becker Funeral Home, 806
West Minneola Ave, Clermont. Debbie would have celebrated her 67th birthday on February 11.
Her ashes will be interred at Bushnell National Cemetery.
