Obituary

Daniel S. Hunt, MD, passed away on November 29, 2025, with his loving wife of 47 years at his side. Born October 25, 1952, in Billings, Montana, to Rodney Y. Hunt and Edith R. Lovelace, Dan grew up in Anaconda, where he graduated from high school before working briefly in the Burlington Northern Railway Roundhouse. In 1972 he joined the U.S. Navy.

After completing his training, Dan was stationed at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, serving as a Hospital Corpsman and EEG Specialist. During his service, he received a special commendation for exemplary work assisting neurologists in solving a particularly difficult case. It was also during this time that he met the love of his life, Mary Anne Papada, whom he would later marry.

Following his honorable discharge in 1977, Dan and Mary returned to Montana and were married in Butte in 1978. Dan went on to attend the University of Montana in Missoula, graduating with honors and earning a B.S. in Pharmacy in 1982. That same year he was accepted into the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City. After receiving his M.D., he completed an Emergency Medicine residency with Summa Health Systems in Akron, Ohio.

In 1989, Dan accepted a position with Dakota Clinic/Dakota Hospital—later Essentia Health—where he practiced emergency medicine until 2017. Declining health eventually forced him to step away from the work he loved. Leaving his practice, colleagues, and friends was heartbreaking, and he and Mary retired to Florida. He held a special affection for Fargo and remained grateful for the opportunity to serve its community. In his final days, he found comfort in memories of his time there.

Though Dan's medical skill was exceptional, his deepest passion was reflected in his artistic woodworking. Turned bowls, exquisitely crafted boxes, and hand-built furniture fill the home in Clermont which he and Mary shared for many years. With the help and compassion of caretakers and neighbors in this rural community, Dan was able to spend his final years in the comfort of his own home.
