IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Clayton Verdell
Gilbert
November 14, 1939 – April 15, 2024
Clayton Verdell Gilbert, a cherished resident of Leesburg, breathed his last on Monday, April 15, 2024, at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy of family and friends who will carry his memory for generations to come.
Clayton Verdell Gilbert, simply known as Verdell to his friends and family, was born on November 14, 1939, in Jacksonville, Florida, to proud parents William Clayton and Lena Pearl Gilbert. He was surrounded by siblings Nadine, Hasty Durell, Sarah Nell, Robert "RL", Mattie Josephine, Lena Ellean, and Lorraine. He is survived by Mattie Josephine, Lena Ellean, and Lorraine.
Verdell was the beloved husband of Betty Jo (Sanders) Gilbert, to whom he was married for 64 years; together they built a family filled with love and laughter. He was the proud father of Ricky Gilbert, Sandra Ramos & Son-in-Law Frank Ramos, Betty Jean (Gennie) Bell, Tony Gilbert (deceased), April McDowell & Son-in-Law James McDowell, and Sonya Stephens & Son-in-Law Jamie Stephens. His nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, who affectionally knew him as "Paw Paw" or "Papa Dell," brought him immeasurable joy and pride.
Verdell was known for many things. He was known for his commitment to his family. He loved listening to Johnny Cash and singing karaoke. He was also known for his passion for all things outdoors. He was not afraid to work with his hands. He loved to hunt and took every opportunity he could get to travel up to Georgia to spend time in the woods with his hunting buddies. Even more, he loved to barbecue, and was known for his delicious recipes that always seemed like they would be done in "about ten more minutes."
Verdell's presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His dedication to his family, his love for hunting and barbecue, and his commitment to his community leave a lasting legacy that will be cherished for generations to come.
On Saturday, April 27, 2024, friends and loved ones are invited to pay their respects and share fond memories during a gathering from 12pm to 2pm at Becker Funeral Home in Clermont. Following the visitation, a Funeral Service will commence at 2pm, where Verdell's life will be honored and celebrated.
