Obituary

Charles Harrison Wilson, Sr., 85, of Leesburg, FL passed away Sunday, May 17, 2015 at Lake Harris Health and Rehabilitation after a short illness. Charles was born on October 15, 1929 in Baltimore, MD, the son of the late Daniel D. and the late Elizabeth (nee Harris) Wilson. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his military service Charles received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and his Masters' Degree equivalent in Education from Morgan State College. He retired in 1992 from the Baltimore City Public School System after a long distinguished career in teaching. He was one of the best because he loved his profession. During his lifetime, he also pursued other career avenues. He was an engineer with Western Electric for a short while and a postal clerk with US Postal Service, as he completed his credentials to become a teacher.

Charles married Doris Mary Distance on January 1, 1952 and from this union were born five children.

Charles enjoyed a full life. He was a total family man, a quiet man, a gentle giant and enjoyed supporting and attending all family functions; birthdays, weddings, reunions, graduations, little league games, school intramural sports, and others. One of his best participatory sports was bowling. He remained an avid bowler with the 'Chalk Pushers' teachers bowling league in Baltimore for years. One of his biggest joys was when you ask him for help when solving Math problems. Some fonder memories included sitting with him on Sunday all day munching on chips and peanuts watching football and baseball throughout the season.

He also joined the Beta Sigma Tau Fraternity, Inc. during his professional career.

St. Francis Xavier Church in east Baltimore City on N. Caroline St. was where he married and remained a member until he relocated his family to the west side of Baltimore City. He then joined and raised his family at the Church of St Cecelia on Windsor Ave.

Soon after his retirement, Charles and Doris, relocated to Leesburg, FL where they have enjoyed a wonderful new life in retirement. Charles, Doris, children, grandchildren and others, have thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship of countless new friends especially in the Royal Highlands Community where they have lived for the past twenty years.

His 'new' family has extended out to many of the other retirement communities in the area. It is how he became a member of St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Clermont, FL in 1996. Charles delighted in Sunday morning worship with his wife and the fellowship that followed each service.

Charles enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Monarch Golf Club of Royal Highlands, the Royal Highlands Softball League, a charter member and treasurer of the African Heritage Club of Royal Highlands. He also bowled with the Royal Highlands bowling group. As a side note, Charles' swimming pool at his home was open to anyone who was interested in taking a dip, but he would not swim. What a great sight to watch Charles dance the 'jitterbug' with his wife.

Charles leaves to cherish his memory a devoted and loving wife of 63 years, Doris Distance Wilson, two daughters, Carolyn Wilson Smith (spouse, Kenneth), Karen Wilson Whitehurst (spouse Thomas), two sons Kenneth Wilson, and David Wilson (spouse Ollie), very special family friends Bryant Poindexter, and Leslie Rogers, six grandchildren, Kris, David, Jr, Kerri, Kelli, Miya, and Daya and one great grandchild, Kylie. He leaves a host of other relatives, including, many nieces and nephews, many great-nieces and great-nephews, an extended family of two sons, one daughter, eight grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues. He was loved very much and became affectionately known as "Pop-Pop", "Nick" and "good ol' Mr. Wilson".

He was preceded in death by his son, Charles H. Wilson, Jr, both his brothers, William and Theodore Wilson and his one sister, Catherine Brown all of whom were very dear to him.
