Obituary

Charles Edward Franklin Sr., 86, of Groveland, Florida, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on September 16, 1939, Charles was the son of Joseph Jackson Franklin and Ione Wigg. He was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy (Larry) Yaros. He married the love of his life, Mildred Edith Gilbert, and together they built a family rooted in loyalty, humor, and quiet strength.

Charles was a devoted father to his children:

  • Chuck Franklin (Kelly)
  • Pam Larson (Paul)
  • Melissa Pingel (Terry)

Charles also leaves behind Chris Liechty (Sue), a family friend who was like a daughter to him and brought him comfort, laughter, and unwavering support.

He was a proud grandfather to:

  • Tina Duron (Dax)
  • Traci Williams (Justin)
  • Tyler Franklin (Corey)
  • Stephanie Larson
  • Rachel Larson
  • Andrew Pingel
  • Ryan Pingel

Charles was also blessed with 4 great‑grandchildren who brightened his later years: Addison, Charlotte, Remy, and Riley.

A hardworking and steady presence, Charles spent his career as a machine operator at U.S. Steel in Gary Indiana, where he was known for his reliability, strong work ethic, and easygoing nature. After retiring in1999, he continued to enjoy the simple, meaningful rhythms of life in Groveland.

Charles will be remembered as a kind, gentle, and loving man with a quirky sense of humor that stayed with him through every season of life. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished and the values he quietly modeled every day.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
