IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Brian Paul
Whittie
March 1, 1949 – May 18, 2021
Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather is finally resting peacefully. Brian Whittie passed away on May 18 th , 2021.
There are not enough words to describe the impact he had on this world.
Brian was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to John and Carol Whittie. He was the oldest of three siblings.
He led a life of service. After graduating from Perry Hall High School in 1967, he enlisted in the Navy and served four years of active duty (1968-71), most of which was spent as a Corpsman, during which time he helped take care of his fellow soldiers. During this time, he spent 6 months in Vietnam, attached to a Marine unit. Even after leaving active duty, he spent sixteen more years in the Florida National Guard, before retiring as a Warrant Officer.
He attended Essex Community College from 1973-75, earning an Associate's Degree.
Brian spent thirty-nine years as a Physician's Assistant (thirty-seven of which were spent at Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater, Fl) , performing cardiac and thoracic surgery, once again dedicating his time and energy to helping save the lives of others. While a P.A., he found it exciting when he was given opportunities to teach his coworkers. He would give lectures to nurses and would travel throughout the central Florida area to deliver trainings on post-op care. Even while being treated for his Leukemia, his own doctors would leave their residents and interns to learn the tricks Brian had picked up throughout his years. It even got to the point where Brian brought his own stethoscope in to demonstrate.
He was an active community volunteer, serving as the ultimate band parent for his daughters while they were in high school, and then again after he retired, when his oldest granddaughter joined her own high school's marching band.
He loved traveling, often camping in his motorhome while in the company of his friends and family and dogs. He was an avid photographer and woodcrafter. Brian was passionate for history, filling his office shelves with books of facts and information on the Civil War and other bits of American history. This love of history influenced his travels, as he would make stops at historical sites whenever his trips would allow.
More than anything else, Brian will be remembered for bringing light to the world. He was always one to have a silly joke or clever comment to share, and he had a laugh that would make everyone around him smile. He enjoyed bringing joy to everyone's day, whether with that remarkable laugh or the traditional Christmas delivery of red velvet cakes for his friends and family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Linda, and his daughters April and Amy (and their partners, William and John). His sister, Denise, and his brother, Neil. He has six wild and wonderful grandkids (Abby, Michael, Moira, Brynn, Alex, and Zach) who loved to laugh with him. He is also survived by his nieces (Erin, Mikaila, and Emma) and nephew (Martin), whom he loved as his own grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Brian's name (Brian P. Whittie) to H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center (Bone Marrow and Blood Product Research Center) in Tampa, Florida. (12902 USF Magnolia Drive Tampa, FL 33612)
