IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Benedict Joseph
Maguire Iii
January 29, 1947 – September 12, 2021
Benedict Joseph Maguire III was born on January 29, 1947 in Brooklyn, NY to Benedict Joseph Maguire Jr. and Helen (McGarry) Maguire. He attended Bishop Loughlin Catholic High School and Manhattan College. After graduating from Manhattan College in 1968, he attended Officer Candidate School for the US Navy, where he began his 26-year Naval career as a Supply Corps Officer. During his time in the Navy, Ben also attended the University of Michigan to obtain his MBA. Upon retiring from the Navy, Captain Maguire entered the private sector in computer software sales.
On September 26, 1970, Ben married the love of his life, Claire Maureen Tanabe. As a Navy family, Ben and Claire lived all around the country, from California to Kentucky, to Hawaii and Pennsylvania. Along the way, they were blessed with two daughters, Christina and Elizabeth. Ben enjoyed baseball, golf, traveling and good food (and wine!), but nothing topped spending time with his beloved family.
After retiring in 2006, Ben and Claire made the move to Clermont, Florida to be near their expanding family. It was shortly after the move that he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. Ben fought the cancer with admirable strength and was able to enter remission twice over the last 15 years. Sadly, Ben's brave battle ended on September 12, 2021.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 51 years, Claire, his daughter Christina Poynter, her husband Jeff and their two sons, Collin and Ryan Galinas, as well as his daughter Elizabeth Lack, her husband Erik and their three daughters Emma, Ava and Amelia. He is also survived by his brothers Robert Maguire and Joseph Maguire, sisters Maryellen Eisen and Grace Lind as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life for Ben will be held at Becker Funeral Home, 806 W Minneola Ave, Clermont, FL 34711, on September 26, 2021 from 5-8pm. Those who knew Ben know how much he loved Hawaii and how he embodied the spirit of aloha! With that in mind, save your black attire for the funeral and pull out the aloha shirts! Please join us to swap stories and celebrate the life that Ben lived for over 74 years!
The funeral mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 720 12th St, Clermont, FL 34711, on September 27, 2021 at 11am. Ben will later be interred at the Florida National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ben's honor to the International Myeloma Foundation: https://www.myeloma.org/
