Obituary

Barbara A. Whitaker of Groveland, FL., peacefully passed away on September 7, 2016 with her family at her bedside. She was born in Leonia, NJ and moved to Massachusetts while in high school Barbara met her future husband Ken through her college roommate, Doris Knetchel, who was also a high school classmate of Ken. She graduated from Framingham State University in 1964 with a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education. Barbara and Ken were married on June 25, 1965. Upon settling in Enfield and Ellington, CT she retired from teaching early in her career to raise their two children. Over the years there were many entire family vacations that produced lifetime fond memories. The Family later relocated to the Conway area in Orlando 38 years ago. She was a soccer, band, junior choir, home swimming lifeguard, and scouting Mom during the years spent in Orlando. She also was a long time treasurer of the Boy Scout Troop 283. Later on, she successfully pursued banking as a second career. The soul mates Barbara and Ken loved traveling together in the five of the seven continents and the entire U.S. Her favorite vacations were the Great Smoky Mountains and Australia/New Zealand. Besides traveling Barbara enjoyed craft shows, moh jong, difficult Sudoku puzzles, cross stitching, flower gardening plus being a long time Gator and NASCAR fan. Barbara was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church and participated in the Church's weekly Counting Group for many years. She was active in the Friends of the Cooper Memorial Library organization in Clemont. Barbara and Ken formed the Central Florida Chapter of the Framingham State University Alumni Association. She was predeceased by her daughter, Stephanie in 2006, her parents and sister-in-law Judith Whitaker. She is survived by her husband Ken of 51 years; son Todd (Pam) Whitaker of Riverview, FL; brother Charles (Faith) Augat of Mashpee MA; brother-in-law Robert Whitaker of Northfield MA; sister-in-law Julia (Don) Russell of Springfield MA; steadfast cousin Carol Guastelle and family of Fairfield CT; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews, plus countless number of friends. There are three children that have adopted Barbara as their precious grandmother, which include Jake Guastelle of Fairfield CT, in addition to Kiyomi and Dhani Daughtry of Orlando. A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at the St. Luke's United Methodist Church / 4851 Apopka-Vineland Road in Orlando on Saturday Sept. 17th at 10:00am. There will be a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations can be made in memory of Barbara to the Florida United Methodist Children's Home at 51 Children's Way, Enterprise, FL 32725.
